Stochastic threat in Salem: Satanic Temple headquarters evacuated due to bomb threat

Dustin Luca of the Salem News reports somebody e-mailed messages to local law enforcement and various media outlets about an alleged bomb at the Satanic Temple's Salem headquarters, which has been evacuated.

Rightwing fanatics are all atwitter about the group's Satancon at the Marriott Copley Place at end of April.

Conveniently, the rightwing fanatics mentioned also specifically tell you which bigwigs at Marriott to write to, if you wanted to, for instance, tell said bigwigs to pay no attention to the frightened bible-clutchers.

Also said right-wingers claim that 1.9 million Catholics live in Boston. Which is pretty amazing, because that means that Boston's population is at least 1.2 million people larger than I had thought. No wonder we have a housing crisis!

It looks like there are approximately 1.9 million Catholics in the Archdiocese of Boston, which includes a large section of the Greater Boston area. So they didn't really phrase it right but it's not completely wrong.

Unfortunately, TFP don't represent 1.9 million Catholics. They're a fringe hate group that spawned from a nutjob in Brazil decades ago who thought the world, including most Catholics, weren't following Catholicism properly after the Second Vatican Council. Their founder thought Jews were the cause of Communism in the 30s.

Fortunately, their clout maxes out at getting Catholic universities to remove links to Planned Parenthood from the University healthcare pages. So, pointing an internet hate group email campaign at a hotel manager to get him to cancel someone's meeting room reservation is right up their alley. I'm sure the link is shared on all the Catholic FB groups across the country by now.

And there are 49 million people in XYZLand, an area that encompasses most of the Northeast. True, it's made up, but that just puts it on the same footing as any archdiocese in the world.

Boston is specifically unique in that for an urban area of its size, the amount of separate townships is astonishing. Most equivalent urban areas have much larger actual city-cores before the "suburbs" start. Camberville, for example, would be part of the city of Boston in any sanely developed area. People in Charlestown go to Somerville for groceries and restaurants and car maintenance and all of that before they drive across the charles to get it done "in Boston", Brookline uses the city amenities of Allston/Brighton/JP constantly in a way that feels like that's part of their neighborhood.

These people are still crazy but it's not inaccurate to discuss the greater Boston area when you're trying to compass what in practice is the "city" of Boston as most people outside the 95 loop see it.

Please don’t link directly to fascist websites. Not knowing what’s at the end of the link means people unintentionally give them traffic, thus advertising revenue. It is better to link to coverage of the issue that isn’t directly hosted or posted by reactionaries and if you feel that you absolutely have to post it directly run it through archive.org so it isn’t giving them the traffic.
