I guess the Boston Sea got smaller. I liked having a Cardinal in charge.

The Archdiocese of Boston has an archbishop. (Cardinal O'Malley is the current archbishop.)

Being elevated to cardinal - a discretionary honor on the part of the pope - is a personal honor that does not change that office. It's not automatic. There's no guarantee that Abp-elect Henning would be so honored, as Pope Francis has been shaking it up in that regard.

I now See. That we're not talking Galilee!

…until 3 years after he came to Boston, if I remember correctly. It took Cushing 14 years before he was elevated

Closer to a year or a year and a half for O'Malley.

You're right.
I was sure it was '05. I must have been thinking that it was before JP II died.

It is the archdiocese of Boston, whereas Providence is a mere diocese.

Why is this hard?

Appointed to Boston July 1, 2003
Installed in Boston July 30, 2003
Announced cardinal February 22, 2006
Becomes cardinal March 24, 2006

He's from Ohio. Probably won't stay in Boston to overshadow the new guy.

If I were a cardinal, I'd retire in Rome and say daily Mass at whatever church in the city I was assigned to.

O'Malley's church is the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria not too far from the main train station.

That's pretty much what happened to him when the priest sex abuse scandal got too hot. He was appointed at Santa Maria Maggiore in Roma, which is a major papal basilica. Pretty cushy gig.

But "Cardinal" goes in between the given & family names, so Bernard Cardinal Law or Sean Cardinal O'Malley.

The Vatican wouldn't be the worst place to live for your retirement.

Would be how we should refer to Our Dear Leader.

I've never understood the FirstName Cardinal LastName thing, but that being said, as a non-Catholic there is a lot I don't understand about The Church (which puts me in concert with most Catholics, too).

The practice is slowly dying out, it seems, but as with much in The Church, change moves slowly.

Law was such a facilitator of child sexual abuse and rape. He was more than a facilitator, he was an accelerator. I spit when I hear his name.

"Gets to..."?

Ummm.... He's been dead since 2017.

He's an order priest, so still answerable to his superior in the province or territory or however the OFM Capuchins are organized.
It would probably be to live in community with other Franciscans at a parish or monastery somewhere, maybe near his family or one of the places where he has worked.

... we attended Mass in a parish that seemed to be staffed largely by retired African bishops and archbishops. It was kind of awesome.
