GBH beefs up statewide news coverage in deal with Springfield, Cape stations
GBH announced today it's teaming up with public-radio stations in Springfield and the Cape to report on news from the Berkshires to Provincetown.
The new Connecting the Commonwealth, to be headed by Jennifer Moore, will mean more Massachusetts news and feature stories on GBH, New England Public Media, whose coverage ranges from the Happy Valley to the New York line, and CAI on the Cape.
"There’s an immense need for local journalism on issues that matter to Massachusetts residents," Dan Lothian, editor-in-chief of GBH News, said in a statement. "Through our relationships with NEPM and CAI, we’ll partner to create content of interest to all of the state’s 7 million residents, something few media outlets in Massachusetts can do."
In recent years, MassLive, which started in Springfield, has been extending its reach to the east. And then there's the Globe, although its expansion in recent years has focused on Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

The Boston Globe has extensive local coverage from
the Seaport to Cambridge and through Somerville and Brookline.
It doesn't appear they reimburse the interns for mileage so the geographic scope is limited.
Hope this works for GBH, and us.

Fascinating.
…not all criticism of public radio is mud slung by the bad actors from amongst elements of the right to discredit and undermine the spotlight, the disinfecting sunlight of authoritative, reputable coverage.
I have written more than one letter to NPR, APM, WBUR and WGBH and others pointing out when I see cant, bias, loaded language, pandering, water-carrying and a thumb on the scale.
I know a few things about the contemporary newscape,(news, business, political continuum) and when I say a few things, I’m not being coy, or humble, I don’t know all that much.
I’m a Democrat, but I can’t abide hypocrisy.I get that this is the Devil’s bargain we’re caught up in.
I ought to take a class, or read a book on it, but I grope about to develop my own thesis. I get the internet collapsed the economic model and media consolidation brought news under a corporate umbrella no longer in the service of the country, but in service of their bottom line. This is an altogether different transaction. This is an existential threat that we must harden in the service of truth. The new reality has seen the dissolution of the walls between: news, commentary and opinion, journalism, marketing, sales and more. News is under an existential threat including public media as commercial interests demand not alienating audiences that are strongly self-selecting and segregating. So, bias exists almost across the board and is a matter of economics, but some of it may be from the righteous fight in the ‘Poison Kitchen’ to strike at the head of fascism.
