In Hyde Park, it could soon be time to Stop & Shots

The Boston Licensing Board decides tomorrow whether to let the new owner of the old Green Gardens packie and market on West Milton Street in Hyde Park change the store's name to Stop & Shots Liquors & Deli.

At a hearing today, Tom Truax, attorney for owner Vadilson Pina, gave three reasons for the proposed name change: Pina doesn't want to be associated with the previous owners, with whom there were unspecified issues, stigma, even, associated with them; he likes the alliteration of the S sounds and "it's a play on Stop & Shop.' "

Nobody, including the grocery chain, spoke against the proposed name change.

Why not call it "Shots, Loosies, and Keno"?

“We sell ciggies and beer, what the fuck more do ya want?”

How about Slurred & Sloshed

EDIT: Stop & Stir would also be an improvement.

I'm very surprised they'd let this get through uncontested, especially since some Stop & Shop stores sell alcoholic beverages. Is it possible that their legal team wasn't paying attention?

In Somerville on Broadway and Rt 16 there's a liquor store next to the Stop and Shop called "Contan Liquors".

Whenever I look at the sign by the road I think it says, "Contains Liquors" as if to let people know it's one of the few S&S where you can buy booze.

Nobody, including the grocery chain, spoke against the proposed name change.

Yes, but wait until their lawyers find out about it. They will not be particularly kind.

I'm not so sure about that.

There are several 'stop & shop' clone named stores out there. Mostly small markets..

and of course "Compare" (latino grocer) which in spanish means "Shop". combined with their tag line "Stop & Compare", which in loosely translated would be "Stop & Shop".

I think the words "Stop" and "Shop" are so generic that it would be hard to prove brand confusion. Plus this is a liquor store, Stop & Shop doesn't sell that (well except for some key locations like Malden)

..compare in Spanish means compare.

Comprar might be what you're thinking of.

/End pedantic moment

I know the owner of the store :-) He has explained to me the name.

What I state is his explanation. It's a playing on words.

Right now, Stop & Shop doesn't have a surplus of cash to expend on frivolous lawsuits.

A misspelling of Stop and Shoot came first to mind.

Stop and Shop merges with A&P to become Stop and Pee.

missed opportunity

Stop and shop propably doesn't care as long as there is no logo that is similar to theirs.

I wonder what the "issues" and "stigma" are?

Under the original owners, you could take out enough meat from your subs to make another sandwich or two and still have a sub that was more packed than the subs that the chains serve. Once they got bought out several years ago, it was hard to tell when they were even supposed to be open.

Fuck this guy for slandering Quan. The former owners were beloved in the neighborhood. Great subs, generous portions, decent beer at 25% lower prices than others in the neighborhood. They fed me a few times during covid when the grocery store shelves were bare. And the time Quan sprayed Lysol directly in the face of the belligerently unmasked guy in like April 2020! Unfortunately never able to reopen after a mid-pandemic fire, so I've been looking in the windows at all the unsold liquor and wondering what the deli cooler smells like for a few years now.

Lame mistake fixed.

I suppose it's marginally better than naming it "Pop a Cap."

Gotta give a hat tip to the food not just the booze.
