Venerable Brookline breakfast place closing down

Patrick Maguire reports the Busy Bee, which the Christakis family opened in 1967 at 1046 Beacon St. on the Brookline side of Audubon Circle, is closing its doors as the family moves on. They report they are negotiating with "a prospective new restaurant tenant" for the space.

Brookline.News talked to Chris Christakis about the reasons for closing; he said the new place, in the building the family owns, might also be a breakfast nook.

It was only a matter of time but this is another gut punch. The place is a time capsule to 1989. The last vestige of old Brookline.

It's the closest thing to traditional diner we've got for miles. (Not many diners left in Boston or even Massachusetts.)

The food wasn't awesome but it was priced right and quick. Tuna club with fries. Maybe a mug of coffee to wash it down. Server who called you Hun. Few college kids.

Where am I to get a Snack or a Meal now?

It was obvious they'd be gone soon -- nothing else has hung on -- but still I weep. I just hope the next place still serves lunch and is quick and affordable.

The Brookline Bank branch recently announced they'd be closing so I think the last thing remaining on that strip from last century is the oriental rug store nothing is left from my youth.

And found the food increasingly difficult to digest.

But I always liked the ambiance and serveral times ran into folks I knew from completely different neighborhoods.

i think i ate there 3-4 times while at BU in the early 2000s and felt like trash after each visit. i would have loved to have continued going there, but the food just wasn't worth the toilet chaos.

that block of Beacon street is unrecognizable now... and it might be cursed. I don't know how a Whole Foods could manage to fail there with all the BU students with mom and dad's credit cards at the ready.

Doesn't really have a diner feel to it (no counter to belly up to and sit on a swirling stool), but definitely old school.

Jim's Deli must never close.

I had my 30th birthday there, and they catered the party my wife threw for me for my 40th.

With Menton gone, there is no other restaurant in Boston i would want to eat from on a birthday than Jims.

They still have counter service with the belly to the counter.

At least it didn’t fall to a freak accident like Ohlin’s oven explosion (world’s best dough-naughts imho) and Aram’s Cafe (Cubby Oil filled their basement with fuel oil.)

I ate there pretty regularly decades ago but then it got rowdy twice in a row — people at the counter shouting and threatening to fight with each other, the servers yelling, me cowering over my grilled cheese and fries. I stopped going.

When Planned Parenthood was across the street, that was where clinic escorts used to go after our shift. I always think of warming up over coffee with friends when I'm over there. RIP

Does anyone else remember drinking milk or orange juice out of paper cones? That was in the late 70s. Driving by there as an adult, I was always surprised it was still there. It was a good run.

Oh no! I always wanted to try it, but I only thought about it while driving by, when we were invariably trying to get home with tired kids. I hope they find a new owner who doesn’t change it.

Burned on two sides, untouched on the other two. I haven't had sausages like that since the last time I went to the Arlington Diner.
