Weir alright: After 30 years, Dukakis, others break ground on Muddy River cleanup

Work officially began today on a project to restore the Muddy River to something closer to what Olmsted might recognize - and to reduce the odds of another devastating flood along the normally placid series of brooks and ponds at the heart of the Emerald Necklace.

Officials said the first phase of the project, which will last three years and cost $31 million, will involve dredging current channels, replacing some culverts with larger pipes or opening them back up as streams and moving some nearby roads.

Motorists can expect periodic delays during the project, which will include construction of a dam-like weir upstream to prevent flooding during the work.

But when done, officials hope, we won't have to worry about a repeat of the Flood of 1996, when a torrent of Muddy River water flooded nearby areas and shut the Kenmore Square T stop for two months. In 2010, the MBTA had to repeatedly shut service on the Riverside Line when the river again flooded, forcing the T to dam up the line's entrance to Kenmore to prevent a repeat of 1996.

Among the most noticeable changes: The grassy field in front of Landmark Center, formerly a parking lot, will be largely torn up to let the Muddy run free across the land once more. Officials held their formal groundbreaking today on that parcel.

Former Gov. Michael Dukakis, who still takes regular walks along the river and who spearheaded efforts more than 30 years ago to have it restored, praised a tent full of officials and residents from Boston and Brookline for never giving up on the river and the Emerald Necklace.

He recalled the Emerald Necklace's nadir, in the 1950s and 1960s, when state officials agreed to pave over the lagoon for a Sears parking lot, when officials almost gave permission to the Red Sox to pave over the Victory Gardens for another parking lot and when the state came close to building multi-lane highways along and across the Necklace.

Today, he said, Boston has become a world leader in parks. He said that after a recent trip to Paris, he realized that "Boston today is more beautiful than Paris, and I mean it."

Six charged in online sting aimed at men soliciting sex from teenagers

Boston Police report arresting six men, ages 20 through 46, on a charge of enticement of a person under 18 after they allegedly tried to hook up with some online girls who turned out to be police officers.

The six - two from Boston, four from suburbs - were scheduled for arraignment today in Boston Municipal Court. The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports that five showed up for arraignment; an arrest warrant was issued for a Bellingham man who failed to appear in court.

They were snared in BPD's latest sting aimed at alleged minor-seeking men. The DA's office reports:

Boston Police officers posing online as females under the age of 18 were contacted by each of the defendants throughout yesterday afternoon and evening. Each of the defendants agreed to meet the officers – whom they believed to be a teenage girl - at and around a downtown hotel to exchange cash for various sex acts.

Each defendant described the clothing he would wear and provided his phone number. When officers spotted the defendants, they moved in and called the given phone number. Each defendant's phone rang when called by police, and each defendant was taken into custody.

Answer to long vexing problem: How many pizzas to order for a meeting - and what kind?

Ned Bachelder, who organizes a local get-together of programmers who use Python, was getting tired of trying to figure out how to feed the herd. So he's written a script he calls pizza.py to give him an answer.

Seat might be opening up on the School Committee

Updated to reflect the fact that while O'Neill's term expires, he hasn't indicated that he wants to retire from the School Committee.

Boston School Committee member Michael O'Neill's term expires in January and the mayor is looking for people who might want to fill his seat - although O'Neill could also reapply for the position.

Boston School Committee members are appointed to serve four-year staggered terms. When vacancies exist, the Mayor selects members from a list of candidates recommended by a Citizens Nominating Panel composed of parents, teachers, principals, and representatives of the business and higher education communities. Under the state legislation that established the appointed School Committee, "the Mayor shall strive to appoint individuals who reflect the racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of the city."

People interested in a possible seat on the School Committee should apply by Nov. 19. Apparently, finding an application to begin with is part of the process. The city says a copy is available at www.cityofboston.gov and www.bostonpublicschools.org - but it isn't, at least not on the home pages. So cheat and download a copy.

Liar, liar, pants on, oh, wait, his pants are flame retardant!

Seems a Bostonian abroad was returning home when he was stopped at LAX and arrested on charges of carrying a variety of interesting items in his luggage (a smoke grenade, body bags, handcuffs, a biohazard suit, billy clubs, knives and more), although what caught the attention of customs agents was his unusual attire: Body armor and flame retardant pants under a trench coat.

Author not satisfied with Globe correction over Magical Negro claim

The Herald, natch, loves it some schadenfreude over a spat between Dennis Lehane and the Globe over a review - which the Globe corrected - that originally took Lehane to task for portraying a character in a new book as a magical Negro, when, in fact, the character is white.

Body pulled from Charles identified as missing grad student

Investigators have positively identified the body pulled out of the Charles River near the BU Bridge this morning as that of Jonathan Dailey, a Boston Architectural College student who went missing last week, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Confirmation came through his dental records, the DA's office says.

The facts and circumstances surrounding Mr. Dailey's death remain under investigation by State Police detectives assigned to the Suffolk DA's office. We rule out no possibility and we promise Mr. Dailey’s family a thorough, comprehensive search for the truth as we investigate his death.

The Globe reported this morning the body had been weighed down with chains and a cinder block.
