Cannons on the Charles

I always wondered why the Boston Pops plays the 1812 Overture on July 4th since it's about a Russian victory over France.

Bicycling: An Enriching Pleasure:

As someone who's been a bicycling enthusiast since childhood, I now own two bicycles: A ten year old 21-speed mountain bike for biking around town to do errands, go on appointments, etc around the city, and a 5 year old 27-speed Fuji Touring bicycle, which is used exclusively for long-distance rides out in the country. My long-distance country bike rides are mainly done on the weekends, in the good weather, but, on occasion, I do them on weekeday mornings, too.

Is lunch in the sun with a new elderly friend interesting?

Are you interested in direct service volunteering but can't make a long commitment? Volunteer with Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly!

Our organization provides companionship to the low-income elderly without family and friends in Boston. We need volunteers (individuals and groups) for a variety of programs: social events and parties, office work, yard work, and Telephone Reassurance calls to our elders. We are friendly and willing to work around your interests and availability! This is a particularly great opportunity for people who can only volunteer a couple of hours a month.

Fire at Back Bay Station?

Like at least a few hundred commuters, I had to work around a fire at Back Bay this morning. From www.boston.com, it sounds like a small debris fire halted trains and subways through Back Bay. I ran into it at about 7:10, and once it was clear we weren't moving soon, I joined a trickle of folks who walked over to the Green Line. Anyone know how long it lasted?

Looking for a specific florist in West Roxbury

I had a very cool lady do the flowers for my wedding 8 years ago. My friend is getting married and I am trying to find her. She lives in West Roxbury. She uses her own garden for most of the flowers. Her approach with the whole thing was very low key and simple. Her prices were VERY reasonable. Anyone PLEASE email me if you might know her name/address/phone #.

Thanks!

The most rotten karaoke

I agree with everyone who tried to sing karaoke at the Courtside in Cambridge. I too went to the Courtside. I will never go back. I waited 3 hours and I never got to sing. I feel your pain. I Think the KJ was playing favorites with the people there. There are several more places to sing karaoke out there in Mass and CT. Don't give up. You will find them. Once again, THE KARAOKE AT THE COURTSIDE REALLY SUCK!!

Calculated Risks: A somewhat different question.

Speaking of calculated risks, assuming that it's true that most people are decent, "normal" and honest, why is it that hitchhiking, or even picking up a hitchhiker, is as risky as it is? Why do people now hitchhike so seldomly, if at all these days?

Moving Your Cars For Street Cleaning Works

This past Saturday I volunteered as part of Boston Shines and the Beacon Hill neighborhood cleanup. The City of Boston posted signs on some of the Hill's dirties streets, including Phillips, Anderson, Irving and Garden, to ask cars to move the day of the cleanup.

Many owners moved their cars, though I imagine more out of fear that they would be towed. Whatever the reason, this allowed a street cleaner to get to the curb on those streets. I must say, it's amazing how well the street cleaner can do when it can reach the curb.

Things To Do: Blog

From the time I was a small child, I was taught to write thank you notes for kindnesses, memorize others’ birthdays and anniversaries, honor the dead, be organized and tidy and evolve into a social creature that takes the time to remember. I think I received my first box of stationery from my mother when I was five. I was reading by three, writing certainly by five, and my mother did take the time to teach me how to write a thank you note. I am still in possession of a few sheets of paper and the lined envelopes my brother’s then girlfriend gave me for my seventeenth birthday.
