The Blizzard of '78---Memories:

I remember the Blizzard of '78 as if it were yesterday. I was then attending Boston University's (now-defunct) Program in Artisanry, continuing on with my studies in metalsmithing, which, as everyone here knows, I love, and living downtown in a Boston University Dormitory. Since I was living downtown, I didn't have to worry about getting around or being able to get my schoolwork done when the Blizzard of '78 hit.

Notes from a new Rozzie resident

Blue Star Cafe: I'm a fan. It's good place to go on Sunday morning with the little guy. We never have a problem getting a high chair. I haven't had anything but pancakes in the three times I've been there but I've got no complaints.

Romano's (the pizzeria/taco stand) I had the sicillian which wasn't half bad, steak bombs were ordinary at best. There's gotta be a better place in Rozzie. Full disclosure: I have yet to go to Pleasant St but I am looking forward to it.

On Mandantory School Busing Here in Boston:

Although mandated school busing here in Boston was implemented for a reason, I firmly believe that, for a number of reasons, it did noit work out the way it was intended.

It's a known fact that, for many years prior to mandated school busing, the all-white Boston School Committee had violated the Racial Imbalance Law in the most mean-spirited, egregious fashion, deliberately keeping de facto segregation of the Boston Public Schools intact.

Leicester crash: Speed kills!

I just sent this letter to the editors of several local newspapers:

To the editor:

Concerning the tragic, fatal car crash in Leicester, high school principal Tom Lauder said, "It's not like they did anything wrong." Unfortunately, he's wrong... dead wrong.

The speed limit where the crash occurred was 30 mph. Police believe that the driver was traveling as fast as 70 mph, over double the limit.

Question:

As a new member of this blog, how do I go about just simply emphasizing and/or boldfacing just one particular word without emphasizing or boldfacing every word in the sentence or whatever? I have decided against capitalizing the letters of a word or words that I wish to emphasize in my posts, because it looks too much like shouting over the internet, and it more than likely puts a lot of people off. Would love some advice on how to go about it. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Could Blacksburg Happen in Boston?

As of 2:20 pm, the Virginia Tech shooting death toll stands at 32, according to MSNBC TV.

I typically don’t jump into the second guessing fray until I have immersed myself in facts and commentary from opinion makers whom I respect. But I am too damned bothered by one thing about this shooting: the first shooting occurred just after 7:00 am – the second shooting occurred after 9:00 am in a building where classes were being held. Why the hell was the campus conducting business as usual two hours after the initial shooting?

Ride for Your Rights: T Riders Union Rally for Debt Relief

The T Riders Union (TRU), a public transit riders advocacy group, is holding a rally in front of the State House tomorrow to protest the T's ballooning debt that keeps shoveling the burden onto riders in the form of 3 fare hikes in 6 years.

Riders calling for the State legislature to pass MBTA debt relief legislation and will be joined by co-sponsors of the bill (Representatives Carl Sciortino, Liz Malia, and Brian Wallace.)

It'll be a fun rally complete with political theatre and a rider being "crushed" by a massive weight with "MBTA debt" written on the sides.

Phillips Street Park (Beacon Hill) Renovations

Last night, the Boston Parks Department hosted a public meeting to discuss renovations to the Phillips Street Park (which is on Phillips Street between Garden and Anderson on Beacon Hill).

The meeting was led by Angie Murray, project manager, from Boston Parks. Also in attendance: Claire Couric Batchelor from CBA Landscape Architects.

Ms. Murray is planning a three-meeting planning process. During this first meeting, she opened the discussion to the audience to discuss what is liked and not liked about the park.

Universal consensus from the group:

New Beacon Hill Civic Association Officers

At its monthly Beacon Hill Civic Association (www.bhcivic.org) board meeting last night, the officers for the new Board (which starts in May) were announced:

Chairman: John Achatz
President Lori Geissenhainer
Clerk: Kate Enroth
Treasurer: Dave Thomas
Asst. Treasurer: Austin McClintock

The real change here is the selection of Ms. Geissenhainer to be president, replacing Mr. Achatz who becomes Chairman. Lori has been a board memeber for a year and was recently the co-chair of the group's Architecture Committee.

Remembering Father Ward

Hi everyone. Long time reader, first time poster. I grew up in West Roxbury, and went to St. Theresa's School for my younger years, say, the mid to late 80's. Anyone who went to the school or, more importantly, went to Church or had anything to do with the Parish knew and loved Father Robert A. Ward. Funny, human guy whom everyone seemed to like, and was by far the most "normal" of the priests in the parish.
