Ditto for PILOT
Next person I hear saying "PILOT payment" gets the same whack-on-the-head. PILOT=payment in lieu of taxes.
Shoot, that reminds me...
I really need to have the bank reset my PIN number. Thanks.
I'm having trouble reading this article
is it available as a PDF file?
Nothing wrong with PDF file.
the F is Format. Unless it was Document and file that you consider redundant. Doesn't seem so to me.
It's still a pity, though
I was looking forward to reading that PDF on the latest advances in the fight against the HIV virus.
Redundancy is good
In engineered systems, at least ...
I think this is covered somewhere on the SAT test.
I think the PIN number can be
I think the PIN number can be reset right at the ATM machine.
WBUR. Chris Lydon.
Tom Ashbrook works from the canned press releases, hasn't been very original, not very thoughtful. Bring back the previous guy, Chris Lydon http://www.radioopensource.org/
Lydon had his chance
But his head got too big, and he wanted the big bucks. His choice.
Simply not true Don.
I'm a daily listener of the On Point podcast. Ashbrook is probably one of the most thoughtful, quickest and not to mention, most genteel radio hosts on the air, regardless of occasionally being redundant with the acronyms on occasion.
Lydon was not the "previous guy", he never hosted On Point. He hosted The Connection until WBUR canned him in 2001 after a contract dispute. The Connection was cancelled in 2005 and On Point moved into its time slot.
Amen - Tom Ashbook is a great
Amen - Tom Ashbook is a great host. Just listen when he has a replacement and you realize how smart and respectful he is.
It's "The Atlantic", Tom
Hey, Tom is six-feet-plus so I don't want to get on his bad side if he sees this, but one annoying habit he has is constantly referring to "The Atlantic Monthly". Cue the B-R-A-A-A-C-K sound effect; since it left Boston and included at least one double-issue, the magazine has been called just "The Atlantic". I suspect Tom will still refer to PBS's news show as "The Jim Lehrer News Hour" forever!
I still call it Agronsky and Company
I can still remember when the theme music was Procession of the Nobles or March of the War Priests or something.
Seriously? His replacement is great.
I have to agree with the "canned" comment a few posts up. Every time Jane Clayson guest hosts, it's such a relief. She's smart and easy to listen to. Tom interjects needlessly, and too often, with references that sound not like genuine insights, but rather, prepared bits that he had at the ready, in order to say something clever-sounding. He also has a habit of wasting time by unnecessarily expounding on, or explaining, guests' comments and references that should need no explanation.
I've tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, and the best explanation I can come up with is that his delivery is so self-conscious and intentional, that even if his comments are natural and insightful, they just come out sounding fake. Sorry...
