The city's "adult entertainment district," located between Downtown Crossing and Chinatown, more or less. The porno places are now entirely gone, and the "combat" these days are mostly between developers and Chinatown residents who don't want to be displaced by expensive condos planned for the area's rundown buildings.

There are now just two strip clubs left, both huddled together on the mostly-an-alley Lagrange Street.

In answer to your question in regards to Susan Monterey. I had worked woith her on and off at various clubs in Boston for many years. She was one of the last of some of the best dancer performers to grace the stage. She also had a part in the hit tv show, Spencer for Hire back in the mid 80's.The production crew filmed the outside of the Naked I for its opening scene . But she was actually filmed dancing on the stage in the Pussy cat lounge. She was beautiful! If I did know where she was I would not indulge that information.Sorry.BTW would you by any chance be the Tom who once managed the Club66? When Arthur Venus owned it.(1982)

Hi Tangerine,
Thanks for replying to my post.
No, I am not that Tom.
I was friendly with Susan for a while.
In fact, I believe Susan and I met you at a restaurant on Newbury prior to work one evening.
I just wanted to hear that she was well if you knew.
Thanks, Tom.

I found Susan a couple of years ago and we chatted by phone. She sounded very whacked out and possibly high.. sounded like a street person. sounded like someone who never really escaped the zone life.. said her apartment was the size of a shoe box. her words were slurred and I just felt so sorry for her. I'm sure I sounded judgmental instead of compassionate, which I am sorry about now. and that is why she stopped staying in touch. My bad.

Did the Susan you mention have red hair & fair skin?

I have been wondering about her too, we were friends and worked together for several years. We were both "headliners". I went by Demian, had very long hair, loved to dance, but could not do that amazing leg lift (split) that Suzanne was famous for. Wondering if the email addresses here are still good. was glad to hear Peter and Joey went on to own the place in Revere. Bernadette was the bartender at the Living Room when I was there. rather nasty. Unlike the dancers were all super nice. [email protected]
Cheers everyone.

Lorraine and I were best friends and I still miss her and think of her. We went to high school together at Framingham north. Walked to school everyday... and skipped sometimes. I was just going through some of her letters today.
Eventually we both ended up in the strip clubs. She was a beautiful artist and a true friend. I live in Florida now...

I worked the Zone back in the early 80's, starting when I was 17yrs old. What memories this blog is bring back; the Pussy Cat Lounge, Liberty Book Store and the Peep Shows, The Carib Lounge, Boston Bunnies. I remember the Venus Brothers and some of the women mentioned. This is where I really grew up and learned many lessons which actually have benefitted me in career today which has nothing to do with dancing. Looking back is like watching a movie, so many lives ago.

Hello Tangerine, Seems we traveled in close circles also. I worked for Leo (Caribbe) 75, Teddy (2 O"Clock), the Golden Banana 76, where Vickie Valentine was a friend of mine for a while. and attended Squires when I lived in Wakefield. We might have even attended dinner in the north end with the Venus Brothers at one time. I wasn't a dance name at the club per say but I did dance some and operated some other functions for the brothers.

I remember your Dad well. I was dating a girl from Lowell Mass. whose father was Manny Bello. He was an aquaintence of Joe's. Manny owned a place called the Celebrity Lounge in Lowell. Long story short I drove Manny to Boston to meet Joe and I waited at the bar and had a drink with Jesse. Really got along good with him and returned quite a few times to have a drink with him. Great people!!!!!!Loved his gravely voice and sense of humor. Best person I ever saw put a drunk outside and still have the guy come back again, unless he didn't want him back. That was another story. One tough prick.

Louie D'B started the Golden Banana in W. Peabody. El Morocco had dancers like Gina, Carioca.
Joann Sherwood. Band was usually Mike Sarkissian's. Safe place, good drinks. I used to take many visiting firemen there,

Hello,
I am trying to get some family history pieced together and noticed your dad owned the Carib in the 60's. My Grandfather Mike Baker owned the Carib from the 40's to 59 but it was called Checkered Lounge - is what I have heard. He also owned Jeffrey's Lounge I believe on Washington and Stuart Street. I am trying to get information of a dancer who worked the club in the early 50's and had a child in August of 54- Big Red or Rusty would be the dancer. If anyone remembers or has photos of the dancers or the Carib before the 60's, it would be greatly appreciated to show my Dad.

I was Virginia and our dj was formerly a dancer named Scarlett. Anyone else remember me??? And for all those who worked there before my time, it's a bond for life if you've ever been there!!! I hope the best for all of you.

I worked as a trumpet player, in the Downtown Lounge in late 1969 or 1970, with a group from Evansville, Indiana. We were the only white guys in the club - booked for a week, which turned into more than a month - as we could not get paid and had to stay there, living on Revere Beach, eating pizza everyday. It could be a dangerous place, but after the first night - and in time we were considered true brothers in the neighborhood. Two bands worked every night - soul music. Finally one of the brothers helped us escape, by bringing out our equipment early one morning and I was happy to make my way by bus, back to Mpls and my wife. Tony Venus had the power there.

Does anyone remember Topsy? He was a drummer, bookmaker former "leg breaker" who played the 2 o'clock? Just found this site looking for Teddy Venus. Worked the clubs late 60's through 74. Teddy was very good to me. Recognize so many names with found memories. Topsy is probably long "passed". Still trying to find my old friend No No Nannette from Baltimore. She was friends with Jerri Dean. If anyone knows where she is please respond. Teddy actually paid my way through nursing school. Benny and I worked the door. It was 2 for Teddy and 1 for us. It paid for my education. I visited him right up until early '80's. Have had a wonderful career and life thanks in so many ways to him. Some of the best days of my youth.
