Harvard Square: Burritos coming out of its ears

Yes, the Square is getting another burrito place, because the 73,000 existing burrito places just aren't enough.

They appear to be a few weeks away from opening in the former Buck-a-Book space on Elm Street. Here in Davis, they will be joining Anna's Tacqueria, Blue Shirt Cafe, and Boloco in serving burritos or wraps. Walk further east on Elm Street, and you'll reach Porter Square, which has Qdoba and another Anna's. Continue to the end of Elm, and you'll find Tacos Lupita.

Too bad the square is still devoid of a GOOD burrito place....

I am still indebted to that place for opening around 1990, and to the Herrera's carts downtown.

Before then, Boston was bereft of burritos. Sure, there were some upscale mex restaurants and ChiChis, but no taquerias like you find in every college zone out west.

The expansion of burritos and faux burritos is puzzling though. I think it reflects the general influx of Mexican cuisine in the last 20 years, but the reinterpretations are getting kind of wierd. Give me black beans, yellow rice, proper queso rolled up in a stretchy glutenous sheet of tortilla anytime.

No, I am NOT making that up.

Give DeNo's props for fighting back against all the Mexican places that sell pizza, but, seriously, Thai burritos? If only they sold kugel burritos ...

The Wrap (I still refuse to call it Boloco, which I think is a hideous name) has lots of different kinds of "burritos" including a Thai version, the Bangkok. Very tasty. But not a burrito.

Benjapon's, on Elm Street near Davis Square (and right next door to Boloco) also claims to sell Thai burritos. Haven't tried one yet.

If it's going to be a chain burrito place, then it might as well be Chipotle since their cilantro lime rice is tasty! When they first opened in Chicago they gave away free burritos for 2 weeks.

I will never need to set foot in any of the other burrito places in Harvard Square once Chipotle opens. I could happily eat there every day for a month, although the effects on my body might well be Spurlockian (which is appropriate, since they're owned by McDonald's).

They sold it last year. Qdoba is still owned by Jack-in-the-Box.

Mmmmm. Qdoba.

Qdoba is fine if there's no Chipotle. Once you taste Chipotle's guac, you'll never go back.
