Seems they forgot to change their register systems in Massachusetts to take the tax-free weekend into account:

I bought flowers and a card this morning and got charged sales tax. I also bought a $2.50
breakfast. So the supervisor passed the tax off as the meals tax.

On stupid little purchases
On stupid little purchases like that I really don't care. I mean, c'mon, $1.02 in tax isn't going to kill you. Boston's crumbling around us and yet no one wants to pay even a sliver of tax to support it.

Sales Tax

If you want to eat high-fructose corn syrup in your bread and wipe your ass with bleach residue, go on with your bad self.
I think it's been pretty well established that their prices are the same or better than other stores for the same items. They just don't sell total low-end crap, so yes, the prices are going to be higher than the cheapest item available elsewhere.
Simple Solution
Don't shop there. I find that our local whole foods makes a dandy and inexpensive convenience store with a comprehensive inventory.

Well established by whom? Produce and meat are definitely more expensive, case in point the one dollar banana on the receipt.
Reading comprehension
The 1.24 pounds of bananas appear to cost 79 cents per pound, and they're fair trade. Where else have you found fair trade bananas at that price?

He was right on the meals tax (no holiday on that this weekend), but you should have gotten the six-bits back on the non-edibles. I'm surprised you didn't get that back with a smile; the service at my local WH (Brookline/Brighton line) is usually very good. Yes, I imagine it is a small PITA to reprogram the registers, but that's a smaller price than leaving a customer unhappy.

I stupidly went grocery shopping yesterday and bought a few non perishables that would have been taxed. Oh well. I had to go when I had a ride to Market Basket.
I wish restaurants were tax free today.. it would be nice to eat out without getting ding'd today
Check all your receipts
We just ordered a computer from Dell and they are trying to charge us for tax.
Either the stores are lazy and ill-informed, or they are pulling a fast one.
Web Stores
Yeah web stores suck because of this. Particular out of state ones. I mean this sorta thing you have to live in state or 'be in the know" to know its tax free shopping.
They may REFUND your tax to you after. You just need to call Dell Customer Service and say its tax free in here.
EDIT: And folks, its not like the state sends out massive notices to retailers saying its tax free today. But shameful that Whole Paycheck didn't know about this, because a store manager usually can setup the registers for this. (and I'd hope the store manager was a local)
Dell was on top of it
I called them about it, and the guy in India I first spoke with sent me to a supervisor who was in on the situation. She said it would have been taken off at the time of shipment anyway, since her system said any MA purchase on August 13 and 14 qualified for no tax status.
Don't think a huge reseller like Dell doesn't know exactly
when all the tax holidays are, and are perfectly capable of having their ordering system not charge people tax on the tax holidays. They probably have a disincentive to go to the effort, like in a percentage of customers not complaining, or in the float.

Don't get me started.. I used to manage a very large corporate Dell Account. Thankfully our account managers were in Austin.
Yes Dell doesn't charge you until the order ships. One of the few places that still does that. (most do, even if they are out of stock so they can add it to their books right away)
It'll be gone. I tend to believe Dell anyways. They are just huge and tend to be slow on things sometimes..
