Just saw lots of trolleys going up and down Comm Ave. Apparently there was already a bustitution for track work today between Kenmore and Babcock, so these fires don't affect that. Maybe related to the work though?
A firefighter told me this is his worst nightmare and that the T has to do a better job cleaning up the junk and garbage on the tracks. He said years ago there was a fire on the Red Line that caused a few deaths
Except that this one was in an electrical closet, not on the tracks.
Also, if there was a fire on the Red Line that caused deaths, when was it? It'd probably have to be 15-20 years ago at the latest because I can't recall any happening like that.
The cause was a defect in the electrical contact device in the 1963 cars then in service (those cars were retired in 1994). It was one of several major MBTA fires in between 1971 and 1975, although it was the only fatal one. As a result of these fires, more emergency exists were installed, more vent fans were installed, and dry stand-pipes were put in palce through out the entire tunnel network to make it much easier for the fire department to get water into the tunnels.
