He's ready for the mall

Jay girds his loins:

Yes, I'm going to the mall to do my Christmas shopping. Yes, they have signs forbidding firearms. No, neither MA nor NH has "binding signage", meaning that all they can do is ask me to leave. Yes, I will be armed to the teeth. That is all.

That you might indeed-y need to be armed if you are so inclined considering the whacko copycatters that will likely be making an appearance.

Has someone called the state police? it's clear this nut job is about to go on rampage.

Nut job? Rampage?

Nothing in the blog suggests that. Some things have to be bought in a bricks-and-mortar store, like clothing and shoes. If you have to go to the mall, and the state or commonwealth allows you to defend yourself, why not?

When bad things happen, the police often cannot get there soon enough to help. And ridiculing people who want to defend themselves doesn't do anyone any good.

So how about we ridicule people who think
a yahoo with a concealed weapon in a crowded
mall is OK?

Why don't you both do us all a favor and
finish your shopping online.

I would hope that a full grown adult man would be able to defend himself against obnoxious teens at a mall without the use of deadly force.

While you were away, a teen killed eight adults. Some of them were full grown adult men. From what I've read, they never had a chance.

Or even closer, look at the fireman who got jumped over the weekend. . . stabbed twice by a group of teens if I remember the story right. . . One against many is a loosing proposition.

Anonymous - have you ever had martial arts training(not the sports kind)? Did't think so. Dealing with multiple attackers is hard no matter who you are. Throw in a knife or gun on the bad guys side and you are done for.

If you made it through all the hoops this state put in place for your concealed carry permit, they I have no problems with you carrying. I would hope if something goes wrong like it did out west that there would be a few folks around that are armed that could put an end to it a lot faster than the six minutes it took the cops to show up. Look at the difference an armed CIVILIAN made at the church vs no armed folks at the mall. . . . bit different body count.

If you can't prevent the nuts (which you never will) you can at least minimize the damage they do.

Thank God someone was smart enough to bring their gun to church.Martial arts? Idiot.I bet you are a big fat guy with an eigth degree black belt.Dummy.

Nice personal attack, thanks. . .

No, I am in shape, and a second degree black belt in one style and a green belt in another. I have spent about 16 years studying martial arts. . . .I also have my concealed carry permit since you have to be a moron to bring a knife to a gun fight. . .

My point was if you think one guy can deal with multiple teens or adults who attack him you may watch a bit too much TV. Wake up and deal with the real world, if you get jumped by a gang of people and you don't have some kind of weapon to even things up you are dead.

Between Kung Fu classes and meals you watch Dog the Bounty Hunter. At night when you hear a noise you wait, hope, pray that its some crazed junkie rifling through your kitchen battery drawer.Locked and loaded. Finger on the trigger.Whoops, I just shot my son getting some leftover Chinese food out of the fridge!

Has entered a series of reasonable and civil opinions here. He has been attacked in an unreasonable and personal fashion by anonymice and now bostonkid.

John d's original statement, that it is very hard for a grown man to protect himself against multiple teenage attackers, is simply true. I've been there, and I know.

The rest of what he's said here is just opinion which one might or might not agree with, but which is well within the bounds of civil discourse.

Making comments about John d's imagined lifestyle and physical appearance, however, is not civil in the least. Bostonkid, please stop acting like an idiot. It makes everybody here think less of you, not of John d.

"Defend myself"? In a mall? Against what, the temptation to overspend?

I'd be as scared of your defensive gun fire in a crowded
mall as I would be of the nut case's offensive gun fire.

I think you would find most concealed carry permit holders know that you need to know what is behind your target before you shoot anything even a gunman trying to kill you . . . I would trust the ones I know not to take the shot if it was not safe to do so. . .

Don't you just love a good Christmas Fantasy?

Guess who has fond wishes of getting to be a brave gun totin' Dirty Harry hero with his shiny new "official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and 'this thing' which tells time"

While I appreciate the civil tone offered by "f'n moron", "nutcase", and "Dirty Harry hero", I have attempted to explain myself further. I dashed off a quick note on a sore spot, and did not put sufficient thought into what I was writing. For that I apologize.

I'm certain that nothing I could write here would change anyone's opinion of me; it is my own fault for being too quick on the "post" button I guess...

I think you make some good points.

In the case of the CCW holder, though, it's an EXTREMELY small group of "bad apples" - statistics show that folks with concealed permits are the most law-abiding of the law-abiding. We are the least likely to commit crimes of any demographic.

Which, when you think about it, really makes "No Guns Allowed" signs even less useful than tits on a bull...

And you also say things I think most people here would agree with:

I will go to my grave a VERY happy man if I NEVER have to draw my weapon.

Your more lengthy description presents a very different image to bragging about being "armed to the teeth." You're not going to be armed to the teeth. You're going to be carrying a concealed weapon. Armed to the teeth is what that nut at the church was, with 1000 rounds and all. That's armed to the teeth. You're just going to be armed - because if you were armed to the teeth, somebody would notice and you'd get thrown out of the mall.

I still think it's kind of weird to be such a gun enthusiast, and to think, as you seem to, that you are helpless to defend yourself without a gun. But I'm sure there are things about me that you think are weird - or would if I put pictures of them up on a blog. I'm willing to respect diversity.

Well,

1. It's private property
2. The company has said no guns allowed
3. If you want to go shopping, you follow the private companies rules while on their property.

I always find it funny that gun people, and conservatives, for the most part like to overlook other peoples right if it jives with their idea of "freedom" or agenda.

It's unacceptable on the left, just as much as it is on the right. You have the right to carry, as long as you aren't impeding on others rights and putting other citizens at risk.

Is it just me, or are all the anti-gun types on this thread the ones who haven't mastered civil discourse?

Ad hominem attacks = tacit admission that you can't win the argument on merit.

and, if I had to be put into one category or the other, would probably be considered 'anti-gun'. Guns have their place (for instance in forests, during designated hunting seasons), but don't belong in shopping malls.

You're entitled to your opinion, Ron, however flawed it may be.

The flaw in it is that, however noble a sentiment it may be - and I do agree in principle - noble sentiments aren't going to save you or your loved ones when someone decides to open fire on a crowd of innocents, nor will a cop. A law-abiding citizen with a gun will.

The problem with your logic is that a gun-wielding psychopath isn't going to accost you in the forest. He's going to open fire on you at the mall, or when he breaks into your home or car. And he's going to face absolutely no opposition because he doesn't care that you don't think his gun should be allowed in a shopping mall.

Unless of course, a law-abiding armed citizen stops him first.

It's an ugly fact that people who would do you harm will often use guns as their primary tool. That will not go away. Ever.

The only logical recourse is to afford the law-abiding citizens the means to level the field by using the same tools.
