Too late! If you don't have the fixins, you better hope your neighbors are kind

ORANGE ALERT: HIGH2:05 p.m. Just got back from a trip to Centre Street in West Roxbury. Only an idiot would be on the streets now (raises hand).

It's an official snow emergency in the city of Boston, people! And you know what that means? Yes, make sure your larder is well stocked with bread, eggs and milk AND you've pulled up all those crappy old chairs from the basement, you know, the ones missing seat backs and the ones with only three legs, for curbside space saving.

Also, Mayor Thomas M. Menino wishes to remind homeowners not to shovel snow into the street. Such "throwbacks" only make it more difficult for everybody, including Mayor Thomas M. Menino, who, trust me, you do NOT want showing up at your door with a citation.

Washington Street in Roslindale around 2 p.m.:

Push, push, push

Ditto mbta.com, though I'm not surprised.

What do you think the chances are that they'll run the 2:40 Framingham train all the way to Worcester? That bad, huh?

The irony is that I thought about calling my boss to say I'd work from home today, but I wanted to come in for him to show me some new organizational stuff. Guess who called in to say he'd be working from home today.

*sigh* Waiting for the 4:10...

At the Roche Bros in West Roxbury last night, I said to my husbad, "There's a really bad storm coming. We need bread, eggs, and milk." "Why?" he asked. "To make french toast," I said.

"Honey," he replied. "We're vegan."

I'm taking the universal hub warnings way too seriously!

Chez eeka, we've discussed stocking up on soy milk and flax seeds in case we need to make French toast.

Whereas Chicago tacitly allows space saving with chairs, Boston states it openly. Awesome. >>http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/parking.asp

Any Space-savers in on-street parking spaces that have been cleared should be removed 48 hours after a snow storm has ended.

I received an e-mail from the City about the snow emergency and clicked through to the link for the listing of snow routes and alternate parking arrangements.

Did you know that there are no snow emergency routes in JP?

there are snow arteries in JP, but for some reason you have to "See West Roxbury list of Arteries", according to the JP info page.

if your street is a snow artery, there should be signs up saying no parking during snow emergency.

It's a quarter past 2 and I'm still at work in Bedford. I live in Everett. I'm just going to wait until all the other cars are off the road. I'd rather just have to deal with my own insurance company and not anyone else's.

Just got a call from my girlfriend. Seems the E Line isn't running trolley service for the street level stops between Brigham Circle and Heath. They are directing people to the evidently nowhere to be found 39 buses and stand-still traffic down Huntington, so walking may be the best option. No notice online when mbta.com was briefly available, but maybe they just regard not operating their trains as a given.

What a drag about MBTA.com.

The T alerts are working well, though, and I got a few in the ol' inbox. The E line is stopping at Brigham. For the Silver Line, SL2 and SL3 (742/742) are being diverted and are skipping 88 Black Falcon Ave.

Though I note that they are giving a different reason than my girlfriend was given when she was kicked off. They are saying the problem is gridlock, but the driver told her the tracks were too icy.

The #39 I was on took an hour to make it to Ruggles St from Back Bay.

I think I'll just take the longer walk on the Orange Line. May be longer than the E, but its a lot closer than Brigham Circle.

Can I just say how nice it is to have a neighbor with a big-ass snowblower who is, as I type, still going up and down the block clearing people's sidewalks? Thank you, kind sir!

I would like to echo that sentiment. My (very heroic) lady went out to do our sidewalk a couple hours ago with our crap-ass shovel, only to find that our neighbor already snowblew it. Sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

Also, huzzah for living within walking (skiing?) distance of Shaw's. Reason #187 why I love Lower Mills.

Wife just checked in (kidlet had a doctor's appointment downtown today). They're on the Riverway, by Emmanuel. With nothing else to do, she's been tracking their drive home: They're currently moving forward about one car length every nine minutes.

When I got off the Red Line at Davis at 5:30, there was very little car traffic in the square.

Matt O'Malley reports:

This morning, I popped in to Shaws before work to buy some cold cuts for lunch. There was a woman, I am not making this up, who had three completely filled wagons, with six gallons of milk in one of them. Also, there were no loaves of bread left. And it was 8:15 am. ...

Took my wife four and a half hours to go the 15 miles from Bentley College to Rozzie. A friend of mine reported that between New Haven and Hartford the cars came to a complete standstill and people had snowball fights! HA!

Woke up at 5:30 am today...seeing that the snow was supposed to begin at 2pm and continue through the evening, I opted to change my flight from an 8:45 pm to a 2:25pm flight. I got a friend to drive me to the airport at 12:30 and as soon as I walked in the door, I saw my 2:25 flight status change from on-time to cancelled. So they moved me back to the 8:45 flight. Which has been delayed until 11:25.

As the snow has now stopped, Looks like I'll be getting out as planned around 11:25. The past nine hours have been just superb. Thank the lord for these wooden rocking chairs they have in the terminals.

My parents on the other hand left MGH at 1:45. They were just getting off the J-way and approaching Faulkner Hospital area at 5:30...yeesh.

Wow. Our neighbors helped my serendipitously-visiting parents clear a spot and fix their car, while some other neighbors drove over to rescue us in JP where our car battery died while we were caroling for old people. I just LOVE what a snowstorm does for humanity. It's really quite terrific.

Really. Jen Stewart chronicles what sounds like a perfectly relaxing day, which is what happens when you don't go into snow panic mode, although she allows as how it was a bit bizarre to go down to the lobby of the Hancock at lunch and see a live string trio:

... People are streaming out of the building with barely suppressed panic, and three people on folding chairs, in front of the obligatory elf-and-tree display, are filling the air with classical music. ...

Lis Riba goes "feh" in the direction of today's commute. You kids who didn't live through the Blizzard of '05 should stop complaining.
