No, you're just hoping that people won't sink to a sub-human mentality. Unfortunately there's people unfit for society.
Not just the city
Suburban and exurban mall parking lots are prime territory for car break-ins.
Someone is far more likely to see such activity on a city street and call the cops than in a vast parking lot crammed with cars that might have shopping bags of stuff in them already.

Agreed. Maybe the density of the city makes these things seem more common, but I can say that everywhere I've lived (small town; suburb; urban) there have been spates of these smash and grab crimes.
Just don't leave valuables in your car. Period.
