CHB to blogger: Go back to your mom's basement

A couple days ago, Rob expressed disgust with the way Dan Shaughnessy compared Kevin Garnett to Alex Rodriguez. He e-mailed Shaughnessy to let him know. Shaughnessy responded:

sorry -- no time for fanboy rants.

shaughnessy

Which Rob also analyzes, concluding:

... Who else wants to start a collection/bake sale to raise enough money to get Carl Everett back here and pay him to kick Shaughnessy in the nads?

My husband follows the live chats during the games - he's always CHB in that crowd (which includes Curt Schilling).

Dan "Scoop" Shaughnessy criticized the David Ortiz acquisition and called him a "sack of you know what shit."

I noticed that the cool thing to do is to dump on Shaughnessy. I'm going to way out on the proverbial limb and say that I'm a big fan of his. OK, there, I said it.

One of the things I like about Dan is that he realizes that sports goes beyond the multi-millionaires. Every once in awhile, he'll write a column about an ordinary schmoe that does something extraordinary in the world of sports. Years ago, he wrote about some family guy (in Chelsea??) that ran a very respectable marathon, and by chance, had a hockey playoff game that night - and scored a hat trick to help his team win. Pretty cool story. He wrote a number of stories about his daughter who had cancer, about Ted Williams calling all the time wanting to talk to her, and about her softball team. There's a lot more like that.

Yes, the Sox are a big deal, the same with the Pats, Celts, Bruins, whatever. But, some sports writers simply don't get it and think that's all there is. Ron Borges was a perfect example of a single-minded writer and I therefore thought he was a dickhead. The good writers make a stretch every once in awhile and write something that doesn't revolve around a multi-millionaire. I'm sure a lot of the sports nuts could give a shit about those columns, but I like them.

OK, so he was wrong about Ortiz. Big deal, I'm sure he wasn't the only one, and I'm sure he'd be the first to admit what he said. He gets paid to say what he thinks, nobody said he had to be right all the time. Heck, if were right all the time, Theo Epstein would be selling hot dogs at the park while Dan did the wheeling and dealing.

So, keep writing, Dan, I'll read what you've got. I may not agree with everything, but I respect what you have to say.

I'll have to give you that, although I have do disagree with you too.

I'm sure he'd be the first to admit what he said

Actually, CHB would probably claim to have been cursed at the time.

First of all, how can a writer cover a MLB baseball team and call one of the new acquisitions a "sack of shit" and not know it is rude, provocative, and exploitive - for the purpose of selling papers at the expense of the player Shaughnessy maligned?

Not only was Shaughnessy wrong, he was monumentally wrong, as well as rude and exploitive.

If you think this is the rare case with Shaughnessy, you are wrong. It is his MO.

Your excuses for Shaughnessy are pretty lame "I'm sure he wasn't the only one, and I'm sure he'd be the first to admit what he said."

First, name one other newspaper columnist from a reputable daily newspaper anywhere in the world who called Ortiz or any other MLB baseball player a "sack of shit". Good luck trying.

And the apology, how would that go? "I'm sorry David that I called you a sack of shit." Right.

And you are sure it happened. You are full of shit, not quite a sack full but plenty nonetheless.

Then you follow that excuse-making for Shaughnessy's bad judgment, rude and exploitive language, offering yourself as an inept straw men for comparison - your own ineptness is so far over the top that Shaughnessy ought to look good, like a well-mannered well informed sports columnist with good judgment and taste who does not exploit the subjects he covers.

"Heck" you almost sound like the good-humored Gomer Pyle, all stupid and shit but with a heart of gold: "Heck, if were right all the time, Theo Epstein would be selling hot dogs at the park while Dan did the wheeling and dealing." That doesn't even make sense. If you were right all the time, what then? huh?

That you like him is good for you. In spite of your best effort to make excuses for Shaughnessy, even going so far as to belittle yourself to make him look better, he is and will remain an arrogant, provocative, and exploitive sports columnist.

Here's a final thought for you to consider, the Globe is trying to get rid of him.

If this is true, it means that Ol' CHB is resisting, not walking out under his own steam like all the Pulizer-prize winners seem to be.

What does that say about his job prospects and/or him? Somehow, I don't think any networks are calling given his well-documented history of racist candid remarks and knicknaming of players.

To understand the tortured tango that binds Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy and his detractors, consider his March 25 item about Red Sox ace Curt Schilling’s personal blog, 38 Pitches. The conceit was simple: Shaughnessy, who’s also a Globe associate editor, fabricated an exchange between Schilling and six pathetic, ass-kissing bloggers. (“Loser38”: “I used to go to Star Trek conventions and comic-book trade shows. No more. Now this blog is my life.”) Schilling didn’t fare much better: in Shaughnessy’s rendering, the Sox ace was an egotistical, self-pitying hypocrite. Near the end — just in case the gist wasn’t clear — a Shaughnessy surrogate materialized and asked “Schilling”: “What do you say to those media morons who contend that you are a self-important blowhard with an ill-informed opinion about everything and an insatiable need to be worshiped by sheep-like fans and late-night blog boys who live in Ma’s basement?”

What is it about The Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy that makes ordinary, peaceable people want to kick his ass?
