Somebody who's wicked smaht; a Brain. At least in Saugus, that is. From the Bomar Brain, one of the first affordable calculators, which was made in Acton.Annette Leonard

Is this a Boston word? We said this all the time where I grew up in NJ.
I remember using this term in HS(on the South Shore). Never knew the origins-Thanks
I've lived in Saugus all of my life and I've never heard that word used, lol. Weird!
I grew up in Saugus and we've never used that word...I've never even heard of it!
The term was in use when I was a junior-high student in Lexington, back in 1978-79.
I grew up in Saugus but I never heard that word thrown at me (I was one of the smaht kids) Then again, I was minted in 1982, so maybe I'm too young. Someone probably said it to me when I was very young and I never picked up on it.
I grew up in Saugus and no one ever said it (I was one of the smaht kids on honnahs classes, but we never used it). Then again, I was born in 1982, so maybe I'm not old enough. Some grownup prolly said it to me and I never picked up on it.
Yep, remembah this one. THEN: bad to be a BO-mah, and NOW: good to be a BO-mah. Forgot about this one!
Oh, I remember that well. Mid-80s at good old SHS.I actually still use it on occasion online; it confuses my friends from other parts of the country.
A bomah would definitely not write "probably" as "prolly."
Never saw it as a bad thing to be called a bomah.
The company was "Bowmar". I remember them from the last of the mechanical analog computer years.
Yes, as the original poster explained. However, with the Boston accent, it is most definitely pronounced Bomah!
Always wondered the origins of the word! Thanks Anette! That makes total sense. If you never heard this term, you probably weren't one. :)
