Off his meds and in a racial rage

KAB reports her fiance, who is Chinese-American, was on the bus home when some crazed old white guy started yelling racial slurs at him and threatened to kick his ass:

... Shortly after, one of the passengers comes up to Jamie and says, "I didn't hear all of your conversation with him, but if I had I would've said something."

"No, it's okay," Jamie tells him. "You didn't need to — I don't need anyone to fight my battles for me. I went to Boston Latin School — stuff like this happened to me all the time growing up. I know how to handle it. I don't need anyone to fight my battles," he said.

But in telling me the story he revealed something the people on the bus might not have seen. "You know, I really wanted to punch that guy. I felt myself ready," he said, clenching his fist. "I was going to punch him. ..."

Without having seen the event this is speculation. Some people are just crazy. As Chris Rock would say, 'Can't they just be crazy?'. It was racist in content but perhaps the motivation was from a mind in decline. Nevertheless, the Asian gentleman was proper in his reaction (or lack of) which speaks well of him. Truely we are all children of the same God.

damnright, you're kidding, right? Please tell me you're kidding. Racism is racism, and excusing someone's bigotry and hatred by speculating on the offender's mental state is merely another defense of racism. Dude was outright racist, regardless of what meds he may or may not have been on/off. Your god doesn't have anything to do with it. And by the way, what's with the "Asian gentleman"? Hello!? It's OK to say CHINESE AMERICAN, people!

No one's mental illness "excuses" behavior. That being said, I think it is helpful to remember that we're all humans and we're more alike than different. But even if this person really has major mental illness and can't help the things he says, he is nonetheless saying things that our society considers inappropriate and which are hurtful to others. Beating him up doesn't help anything, but neither does just letting the remarks pass because the man has mental illness. Part of treating one another decently is that we react genuinely to one another -- someone says something hurtful, we express to them in some way that this is hurtful. It's insulting and ableist to not respond to this person's hurtful remarks in the same human way as we would with anyone else.
