Two face charges for loaded gun found in baby seat in Dorchester

Boston Police report the arrest of two alleged drug dealers - whom they say stored a loaded gun in a baby seat - in a house that had an armed home invasion in December.

Police say officers armed with a search warrant raided the house at 193 Norfolk St. around 11:50 a.m. on Saturday. They found "multiple plastic bags containing heroin and cocaine, police say, adding they were "stunned and astounded" to find the gun where they did.

Pedro Valdez, 33, and Lasonia Gathers, 27, were both charged with trafficking Class A and Class B drugs, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a high-capacity feeding device and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Police did not say if there was a child in the house.

Innocent, etc.

Only mentioning this b/c Adam is a real reporter.....but should that be 'whom' or 'who'. My public school education and I want to know.

It should be "who," technically speaking, because "they say" is modifying it. If you got rid of "they say," you'd say "who stored a loaded gun" etc. It's okay, though. No need to grab our Strunk & Whites and pitchforks and torches.

In Baby carriages, Toys, Stuffed animals, Car seats, Diaper bags.....And Girlfriends hiding drugs and guns for their men, thinking they won't be searched.

Baby stuff and cereal boxes and rice bags are the first place they look. Where I used to live, one of the tenants of my next door neighbor was burying his stash inside a Bustelo can and burying it in my landlord's back yard!! How da ya like that? What makes them think the K9s aren't going to find it!! Hey property owners....if you suspect your neighbors are dealing drugs and stashing guns and ammo, do some excavation work this spring while you are watering your flowers! Ya just never know....

Oh sure Maria, I bet the neighbors would just love you taking their drugs and guns. I bet when they found out they will be very happy with you.

are drugs illegal again? When alcohol was illegal it produced tons of gun violence. If heroin and cocaine were legalized and taxed it would seem that the guns wouldn't be a-shootin.

Alcohol in moderation is completely harmless. Heroin and crack, on the other hand...

I'm all for making weed and other light, mostly non-addictive stuff legal, but those who are literally peddling death need to be strung up like they do it in Iran.

Why is being addicted/using these drugs illegal?

There is much to be said for decriminalizing use and putting the resources into treatment rather than for-profit prisons.

Dealing large amounts or trafficking large amounts should remain illegal.

as are most drugs actually

but if youre going to compare somebody thats ended up addicted to heroin versus somebody that is having a bottle of wine with a friend to prove a point, well, shame on me for wasting my time

i'd also love to know what fantasy land you live in where alcohol isn't addictive, and where alcohol withdrawal isn't potentially fatal

also, yeah, definitely dial me into this fantasy land where you're on the moral high ground for suggesting that "peddlers of death" be...put to death

i assume you feel that convenience store owners/employees deserve the same fate for not refusing to sell cigarettes

Why no illegal storage of a firearm charge as well? When you are a licensed gun owner with a class A LTC, any weapon must be within your "immediate control", or otherwise locked in a safe or with a device rendering the firearm inoperable, such as a cable lock.

If MA says a single homeowner with a gun license can't leave a firearm at their computer desk to take a pee, why can a criminal leave one where a child could find it without an additional charge?

I suspect the improper storage charge is for people who have a license, then do something stupid, like leave a handgun out where a 3-year-old can get it, and that the illegal-possession charge carries a higher penalty. Courts tend to frown on literally throwing the book at somebody with what are essentially duplicate charges for the same offense.

Because some laws are written to harass or discourage licensed firearm ownership vs. other laws which are meant to deal with real criminals.

I know right? Civil Rights and limited government are just too important to be trusted with us little people. We might make the wrong decisions according to our self proclaimed intellectual betters or something. The 1% can't allow that can they?

Because I'm thinking what you think it means differs pretty dramatically from people who don't think it involves the right to own guns.

Not guns.

Sorry, but I somehow don't feel like I've been enslaved, beaten, burned, poisoned, raped, experimented on or forced to use separate doors and water fountains because it is a pain in the ass to complete the paperwork to bring my mama's rifle home. A little annoyed, maybe.

Comparing rational limitations on deadly weapons to the horrors of Jim Crow is pretty fucking insulting to the millions of people who have been victimized in the past and those continue to be subject to systematic racism and classism in this country.

People have the right to self defense. Something which Jim Crow type laws were passed to strip freedmen of their arms so that the Klan could slaughter them. Clearly you have no idea what happened in the south after the Civil War and need to spend some time speaking with people in Alabama, Mississippi, and the Carolinas.

Come back when you actually read up on what happened as Reconstruction ended, and stop with this BS about Jim Crow and gun control.

Adam,

In case you don't know the cities in MA with majority minority populations have the strictest gun control schemes. Only rich people in cities have the clout to get non restricted licenses and pay for the additional non statutory requirements.

If you're a poor minority in a city: expect a six months application process, police range tests, additional non statutory requirements which vary on a department s whim up to and including hundreds of dollars in training, proof of club memberships, and a restricted ownership roster just to receive a restricted license.

Meanwhile in the suburbs: no restricted licenses, no tests, no restricted ownership lists, no course requirements beyond the state requirement, no club membership requirements, and the application process can take under 30 days.

How the Hell is that not racism or classicist discrimination straight up?

All of which were in place long before Boston became majority minority.

So no, not racism. Nice try.

Brookline and Lowell for starters?

Look at licensing numbers and restricted licenses per town. Compare that to minority majority statistics. It will be an eye opener.

It's why licensing should be done at the state and not the local level.

I really, really, really care about Boston - which has some of the, if not the, most stringent regulations for getting a license to carry in the entire state, put into place well before The Alleged Man decided to stick it to minorities.

I had a blast when I had to take the range test! I got to use their ammo, their revolver and didn't have to clean the gun afterwards. Didn't even have to put up my own target, or take it down! What a great start to the day that was.

Go ahead and post it. I will read it.

Otherwise? This sounds like a load of revisionist bullshit.

And I have read quite a bit about what happened at the end of the Civil War, since it wasn't too long after that that my mom's folk of ambiguous color decided to pass on the South and pass in Oregon.

Self defense is possible without a gun, too. Laughable that you are so insecure as to think you would need one or even could use one.
