First thought is somewhere around Nashua Street near North Station. You can see the trolley viaduct behind it and what looks to be the Hotel Madison (Manger) off to the right.

I think it's actually the corner of Lowell and Causeway. You can see the same building on the right side of the photo below (click to enlarge), just to the side of where the streetcar (future green line) tracks come around the curve.

About three times as many platforms at North Station as there are now. Any idea when this picture was taken? Still running steam trains; West End has not been flattened yet; old locks on the Charles...

Corner of Causeway and Lowell St., early 1950's. See http://www.universalhub.com/2013/when-boston-still-had-elevated-tracks, and you'll see that edge of the building in that photograph.

The location is easy (as others have gotten it too).

However, that Old Thompson ad on the roof only ran for 3 days in December of 1959, from December 20 - December 22.

Based on the 1959 almanac, December 21 was the only day in that stretch when the sun shone for this picture to look the way it does.

So, I'm going to say the picture was taken December 21, 1959.

I thought this looked familiar.

I don't doubt you but how do you know that ad only ran 3 days?

I made it up. My whole post is a joke. The picture is a repost.
