Police: Young Hyde Park teen was walking around Roxbury with a loaded gun early this morning

Boston Police report arresting a Hyde Park 14-year-old on gun charges around 12:35 this morning behind 144 Ruthven St.

Police say officers patrolling the area due to recent gun violence thought it more than a bit odd when they saw two guys walking down the street wearing hoodies with the hoods drawn around their faces, given that the temperature was still around 80 and that it was very humid out.

Drawing on their experience that such people dress that way mainly to conceal weapons - and that one of them was clutching at his waist - the officers went over to have a chat:

Immediately the male who appeared to be holding his waistband fled the officers on foot. One officer followed him and, after pursuing him through several yards, caught up with him as he fell to the ground in the rear of 144 Ruthven Street. As the male fell, the officer observed a thud sound and saw the leaves and grass move about 5 feet from the male. The officer apprehended the male, and further inspection of the area revealed a black loaded semi-automatic Star Firestar .45 caliber firearm that the suspect had discarded.

The teen, too young to have his name reported, was charged with being delinquent for unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, police say.

14 years old carrying a gun. WTH.

I wonder is he a new gang recruit, or wants to move up in the ranks..... tasked with proving himself a bad ass by doing a shooting/murder?

BPD admits to profiling?

Profiling is when they stop people because of their race.

This was stopping them because of their behavior. As you perhaps know, when this case goes to court, the police are going to have to prove they had a good reason, or "probable cause" to stop (or try to stop) these guys. Part of that will be explaining, as it says in the BPD News post, that their long years of experience suggest that guys walking around in hot humid weather with hoodies up might be up to no good and warrant an initial stop, especially since one was grabbing at his waist, since criminals never seem to have holsters.

Compare this to the stop and frisk policy in New York, where people were searched simply for being black in a black neighborhood - which a judge ultimately ruled was unconstitutional.

NYC violent gun crime rate, including homicides, dropped dramatically from yearly highs if over 2000 in the 80s - early 90s, to under around 400. How are crime, violence and quality of life issues under current 'progressive' mayor Deblasio?

How's Baltimore doing these days? Chicago?

Crime went down equally dramatically in Boston - without stop and frisk. We were up around 160 murders a year at the end of the Flynn years and now we're down to 40 or 50. Your explanation?

Ever heard of Boston Miracle? You know, that raaaay-cyst thing where cops locked up known gangbangers for every reason imaginable just to get them off the streets?

The Boston Miracle didn't involve locking people up for no damn reason. It involved trying to steer gang members away from violence and from community activists demanding more of a police presence in their neighborhoods. You might try Googling it - and "Operation Ceasefire." In fact, I'll leave the following snippet from a report on what happened as an exercise in helping you strengthen your Google skills.

The design of Operation Ceasefire was to offer—via a respected community leader—a bargain to young people involved in gangs. Accepting the bargain would provide the youth with the means to leave the gang: more support in school, access to jobs, afterschool programs, and so forth. The community leaders making the offer had access to these youth that the police lacked, and could make the offer more persuasive. The only condition of acceptance was the avoidance of violence: other criminal activity, such as drug dealing, would be handled normally by police, but violent crime would be met with a coordinated response. If the youth refused the offer and continued to engage in violent activity, then the community would offer their full support to the police in bringing the youth to justice, and police would concentrate their resources on only those offending gangs. Furthermore, cooperation between the various levels of the justice system would ensure the necessary evidence for a conviction.

The only time BPD approached anything like stop-and-frisk after the Boston Miracle started was during the Charles Stuart case, and all that did was make large numbers of young black men distrust the cops again.

Now you're unemployed, all non-void, walking around like you're Pretty Boy Floyd, turned stick-up kid, but look what you done did, got sent up for an eight-year bid....

If I opened a holster store.

I know brains are in short supply with a lot of these gangbangers but it's still amazing they haven't discovered that the 'stuck in a sweat pant waistband' is not a viable option when trying to avoid police.

Then they'd have to explain away an empty holster too when caught instead of ditching a gun and hoping it isn't found. Not an easy thing for an underage or unlicensed or convicted felon to do without reasonable suspicion.

They call in reinforcements and repeatedly search the chase route. This is top priority not just to get a charge on a potential shooter but to get the gun off the street-away from criminals and innocent kids who might find it.

Doubt many are successfully thrown way like this.

And getting caught w/a holster might not look good but perp might not even get noticed if he had one in first place.

But let's be honest, these guys aren't that bright and aren't thinking too far ahead either. Thankfully.

They will be cool again, just you wait.

One day, the kids are going to realize what idiots they look like shambling down the street holding up their saggy pants with their left hands like they got dressed in a dumpster in the dark.

All it would take is one kid to say "Seriously, I ran away from the cops like three whole blocks and my pants didn't fall down at all! You should try one of these belt things!"

... so long as old guys continue to get apoplectic about it, make up prison myths about it,etc.

Yeah, it looks stupid. So did the hairstyles popular when I was a teen. And parachute pants, too. Anybody who wore those doesn't get to talk. ;-)

Of youth fashion happens when old people adopt it.

On an airplane the other day I saw a filthy man in his thirties or forties with his pants riding at thigh level and shit stains on his tighty whities.

I thought then, the end is nigh. I can't imagine any kid wanting to look like an incontinent junkie.

Or am I missing the point again and that's the latest embellishment?

I saw a 30-something dad putting his kids into their carseats and BOOM went the pants to the ankles. He had to finish his task before hiking them up.

That's gravity's way of telling him that he's too old for that crap!

The teen, too young to have his name reported

Really? If we want to get serious about curbing illegal guns and gang violence, perhaps it's time to put a stop to this outdated nonsense. Arrested for a serious crime, you mane should be released to the public - regardless of your age.

And please don't try to argue that a 14 year old with a gun is a typical "juvenile" prank, or that the kid is "too immature" to not know better than to carry a gun in public. It's tired old liberal nonsense that has done nothing but teach kids how to evade responsibility for crimes.

Why is a teen with a gun an adult, but a teen with a beer not an adult?

How about we don't release anyone's name until after they've been convicted of a crime? If they're presumed innocent, we shouldn't be dragging their name through the mud until they're convicted.
