Citizen complaint of the day: Portable toilets on the Greenway an affront to Boston

Toilets? Ick

A disgusted citizen files a 311 complaint to assert that visitors don't need to be reminded of bodily functions on the Greenway:

These porta potties on the walkway of the greenway are a terrible example of poor judgement. whoever made the decision to allow:approve these in this location where people are eating/ drinking and enjoying the city needs to rethink how the city should be represented.

Yes portafacilities are pretty gross, visually and otherwise, but they do serve a purpose.

Perhaps Concerned Citizen's anger is a tad misdirected, because if anything the temporary water closets should serve as an illustration of the total lack of safe, well-maintained and accessible public powder rooms in the city.

Or just replace them with nifty signs pointing the way to the Marriott.

They're toilets. Not "water closets," not "powder rooms." You probably can't bring yourself to say "died," either.

..but you are humorless.

That was the point, friend.
What can I say? I'm an admirer, devotee, follower, and fan of metonymy. Why you could even call me a habitué

Also I'll have you know I can say croak, cease, finish, depart, expire and be no more perfectly fine, thank you very much.

With respect to humor, there is a fine line between subtle and non-existent. Your original post didn't quite convey which side of that line you chose.

For your invaluable feedback.

I'll make sure it reaches the appropriate department.

That's sarcasm, right?

I have a friend that lives on Stilman, and we frequently look out the window to admire the view, only to see someone urinating in the alley below. The cute North End side streets near the highway all sort of smell of urine, so if anything, these porta-potties are too little too late.

Is there an event going on on the Greenway that might require additional toilets? Just asking as a guy planning on taking a dump on Boston Common tomorrow (in a port-a-potty before running the BAA 10-K.)

I was planning on having a picnic at the Common this afternoon, and I cannot bear the thought of eating with the thought that there is urination happening nearby. And the thought of this happening so close to children makes me nauseous.

If I were king, I'd make all Greater Bostonians get on the Worcester line and go out to at least past Framingham if they need to do their business.

I think these are primarily for the beer garden. I walked by yesterday and let's just say they smelled worse than they looked.

The beer garden has their own set of portapotties - hidden discretely behind a wood fence.

Is it possible they were placed there to accommodate the walkers on the Avon Breast Cancer Walk this weekend? We have some set up near a park here in South Boston - the walkers passed through the neighborhood earlier this morning.

There was an African cultural festival today. Port-a-johns were also out for SailBoston.

I'll be making my debut as a BAA course monitor.

The warmth and sun did me in a bit. I was slightly off the course for a bit (I went on the sidewalk for a block to walk) but the crew along the route was great, as always. Thanks for being there.

How about some nice public restrooms with attendants? A line of plastic toilets is what hick towns resort to.

We should be WORLD CLASS like Paris!

"What are we - savages?"

Why do you think alleyways have dumpsters in them? If you're behind one, you can't be charged with 'open and gross lewdness'.

It's not like the restaurants can use them after eleven anyway.

up

Why attendants? I can zip and unzip on my own -- or are you trying to find jobs for the displaced Mass Pike toll-takers?

up
Voting closed 0

Public toilets have a tendency to become a favored place for IV drug users to shoot up and can attract other problems. The attendant is more to ensure that people are using the facilities for the intended purpose.

How are placing them in MBTA stations where citizens use elevators for toilets. There is nothing more disgusting than a wheelchair passenger having to deal with their tires being covered with poop and piss stains.

End of argument.

The kind of huge tourist event that necessitates trucking in these things in. A terrible example of bad complaining. Or an excellent example. Or something.

for the most urine soaked event in Boston's calendar year... ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE? Jebus I have been asking this question for years. Who do I write a letter to and shake my fist at? The city? Event organizers? Who puts these things out in city streets?

Dump, no pun intended, the porta potties, and sell Boston Strong branded adult and child diapers instead.

Your "adult diapers" comment reminded me of a call to the Dan Rea show on WBZ-AM earlier this month. I forget the political topic but a woman called and made several good points on the subject then veered off and awkwardly told Dan that she was wearing adult diapers. After a long pause, Dan politely bid her good night and moved on.

Okay I get it everybody is a comedian, it is also equally that we smile laugh and be happy.

However I am slightly concern when last night we had multiple stabbings and a young man struck out of Highway and and is fighting for his life.

Why do everybody appears to find this obscene complaint of porta potties instead of expressing other total complete outrage about the violence in the city and young man being hit by a car and a person driving away.

I guess we're not supposed to take this forum that serious but I also look at this forum as an opportunity for action, to express how I feel I bought Injustice and in humanity among other things.

Not just a place to extend my complaints.

You're so concerned that people aren't commenting on other discussions. Did you? No (except for the 128 one). Why not? Are you including yourself in that group of People Who Just Don't Care about Important Stuff, or are you part of that group of People Who Just Like to Faux Complain about UHub Discussions?

up

Yes I did, and no to either one of your last questions.
However thank you for your feedback it was important.

Apologies if I'm being harsh towards you, but this sort of comment pops up all the time.

Yeah I know Big A.
Maybe I'm just too human or sensitive. These are the most two precious things I cherish as a person, among other positive human qualities I'm trying to preserve in this insane world.

up

none of the rest of us are human, nor do we care about anything else but public pooperies, nope!

I think your cherished humanity and sensitivity can be refined by recognizing that everyone has different ways of expressing their own humanity and sensitivity, on and off the intertubes.

Like probably everyone else here, I'm appalled by the stabbings and shootings. I just don't have anything left to say. I don't have any brilliant suggestions, certainly no flip silly comments. So I don't post. But that doesn't mean I don't care.

up
Voting closed 0

Or commenting for that matter?

If you analyze comments here (or at just about any news website) and you'll see that comments will be drawn by controversy. Who is going to have some beef with someone being hit by a car (except for certain anti-car posters here) or someone getting stabbed. No, we by and large read the articles and reacted quietly.

If you are truly disturbed by the number and types of comments connected to stories posted on the internet, avoid the comments section. Petty little things are what drive the numbers.

Maybe they should talk to those who do and know what happens when there aren't toilets available.

Well, sort of. Put more up or I'll keep working on an invention called The Inflatable Bush.

First of all, I have a bladder and kidney issue. Well, not so much the bladder anymore now that it's the size of a Munchkin. Now that my new life requires me to drink gallons more water to keep my Kidneys happy, I have to empty my urostomy bag more often, lest I leak like a White House intern.

I, for one, was so pleased to see these facilities along the AIDS walk a few weeks ago, and if they remain on the greenway, I won't have to worry about where the nearest potty might be.

Yes, I am pro potty - and fiercely proud of it. (I can also pee standing up now, which is awesome!!)
Peace/out

this location where people are eating/ drinking

It's not like there's any connection between eating and drinking and other bodily functions.

up
Voting closed 0

Well, someone send this citizen up to city hall plaza where a porta-potty has been installed directly adjacent to the big BOSTON sign. It's currently difficult to take a picture of the sign without including the toilet.

up
Voting closed 0

eating and drinking, will need to pee and/or poop. Thus porta potties are a logical extension of eating and drinking.

Not everyone hates the potty. What about those people with health issues?
