Police arrest Charlestown man they say is responsible for recent apartment break-ins

Boston Police report charging Abas Bilal, 23, of Charlestown for an August break-in at Polk and Bunker Hill streets and say they plan to charge him with additional break-ins, including one in which he allegedly began to sexually assault a sleeping woman.

Police say the formal charge is for an Aug. 20 incident:

The female victim told police that she returned home to find the suspect, Bilal, in her residence. Bilal fled the scene on foot, and the victim later discovered that her wallet was missing and unauthorized charges had been placed on her credit cards.

Police add detectives are compiling the evidence they need to also charge him for two other similar and more recent incidents: Early in the morning of Jan. 16, somebody broke into an apartment on Old Ironsides Way but was scared off when the woman he began to attack started screaming and attracted her roommates. Early on the morning of Jan. 21, somebody broke into a Decatur Street apartment and stole several items.

Innocent, etc.

THE BIG GETAWAY, OR NOT SO MUCH
One Charlestown man was befuddled by a snow bank after allegedly breaking into cars in the Target parking lot and then trying to make a getaway in the family vehicle – but hitting a snow bank instead. When police arrived, they found the suspect in the back of Target frantically trying to shovel the vehicle out of the snow. Officers took him into custody shortly after.
The reporting party told police he was coming out of Stop & Shop when he saw the suspect rummaging through his vehicle. When he realized the suspect had stolen items out of the vehicle, he called police and began to follow the suspect. The suspect jumped into the family car and made his getaway, only to crash into the snow behind Target. Through an investigation, police learned the suspect broke into three cars, and several items were located.
Abas Bilal, 22, of Charlestown, was charged with operating after license was suspended and three counts of breaking and entering into a vehicle at night.
