It is just sheer luck that this moronic driver didn't kill multiple people on the sidewalk and at the front door. But don't worry, the Cambridge and Harvard police are hard at work:

HUPD declined to comment on the incident, referring to the Cambridge Police Department for comment.
CPD also declined to comment, referring to HUPD for comment.

Maybe they'll even issue him a lane violation ticket. That'll show him!

Drunk

"The brake wasn't working?" Really? AND he couldn't remember the name of the function he was there to host? Sounds like he was just drunk.

No need to involve alcohol.

Pedal misapplication is a common cause of such accidents. So much so that the phrase was coined for it.

Car and Driver sums up the DOT findings on the recent-ish Toyota scare here:

https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15125313/its-all-your-fault-the-d...

And the NHTSA has a 132(!) page report titled "Pedal Application Errors" available here:

https://www.nhtsa.gov/staticfiles/nti/pdf/811597.pdf

No, I didn't read the whole thing, and I doubt any of the other commenters will either ;-)

That's kind of something the police would think to check.

He admits in the article that he's an inexperienced driver.

Another sad tale

Newspaper offices really need to be more careful. Was it even wearing light-colored clothing? Was it even licensed and insured? If you're going to share the road with cars, you just need to pay more attention, whether you're on foot, on bike, or made largely of brick

Who among us has not driven

Who among us has not driven into the front of a building while trying to parallel park just exactly perfectly?

Naghi said he was originally parallel parked on the other side of Plympton Street, but after seeing that he was on the edge of the white line, he “wanted to get a little closer in.” While turning his car to adjust, he said he accidentally drove the vehicle into the front door of The Crimson.

Need different drivers licences

By on

I have always been a big advocate of having separate tiers of Class D drivers licenses. If you suck, like this guy, you should not be allowed to parallel park or drive 1mph over the speed limit. If you have demonstrated advanced driving skills and hand eye coordination and have a clean driving record, you should be allowed to parallel park, make U-turns, and drive over the speed limit. It would incentivize people to drive better IMHO.

BMW stands for "Borrowed Mom's Whip"

The driver admitted that he is an inexperienced driver. I wonder what was preventing him from taking the T to Harvard Square besides from, you know, the T being the T.

And his being unable to remember the event that he was attending...incredibly sus.
