Citizen complaint of the day: The cruddy shrubs of Faneuil Hall

Shrubs and statue of Kevin White at Faneuil Hall

An annoyed citizen can't believe how nice shade trees were replaced by stubby little shrubs in front of Faneuil Hall and so filed a 311 complaint about it:

Previous mature trees all taken down and replaced with these pathetic shrubs. Much needed shade trees for the summer... gone. Great thinking

Removing the trees certainly does open the space up, but those sorry plants they put in their place are pathetic.

Hope you will be ok.

And we will not be okay.

Sorry, but paving everything has a very steep price - and you pay it, too. Pay it in cooling and heating costs. Pay it in health care costs. Pay it in pollution costs.

Externalities matter, exist, and cost money.

It is amazing how some people will find a way to complain about nothing. Sorry your royalty is displeased your heir. Nice rainy day too. Hope you don’t get a sunburn your majesty.

How much time, do you suspect, did the previous poster spend working up enough steam to complain about the shrubs? Do you think it's the only thing he's spent all day thinking about?

It's possible to complain about things without them taking over your entire life. Complaining about small complaints, though, what's up with that?

I LOLed at the "hope you will be ok" joke but then had to eye-roll at the follow-up rant.

Funny comeback ruined.

Particularly mature trees, especially in cities. They help moderate temperatures and alleviate pollution.

So unless there's some genius longer term plan by the city at work here, this was not smart and will affect you too.

But of course, you're OK with everything, right? Nothing bothers you.

But then shouldn't we expect the trees to be replaced by other trees, saplings at least, instead of shrubs?

Faster than replacement.

So the shrubs are pathetic - in April? Try waiting a few weeks - an amazing thing is about to happen.

These shrubs will magically grow into new shade trees in a few weeks!?

Exciting!
