City orders halt to hotel's annual yappy hour over newfound concerns about mixing dogs and cocktails

The Globe reports the Liberty Hotel suddenly canceled its Yappier Hour, at which dog owners can bring their pets down to a hotel patio to enjoy being around dogs while drinking some adult beverages.

The City of Boston is concerned with serving drinks when there are dogs present, and we are now working collaboratively with the City to address those concerns.

The hotel has held the event for several years now. There have been no prior incidents of barking under the influence.

Meanwhile, on City Hall Plaza, the city is now in its second year of letting a vendor run an outdoor kiosk that lets customers play with puppies while popping a pint.

Did they figure out some people might be having fun?!? We can't allow that in Boston!

They didn't get to come inspect anything for a fee, so they can't possibly allow it!

Just like dancing permits - these things can get out of (bureaucratic) control!

I remember when places actually were hauled before the Mayor's Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing for allowing dancing without a license. Haven't seen one of those in years, though.

So ummm when will they start banning kids form the beer gardens?

Then by all means, ban them too. If you're referring to young humans I'm afraid I can't help you if you don't know the difference between pets and people.

Even by Boston standards of puritanical paternalism.

No drinking around dogs? Didn't we used to have a greyhound track?

Seems like I read about fights and thrown bottles at various bars just about every week here at uhub. Isn't THAT more worthy of attention than dogs on a patio which has worked just fine for several years?

How do you prove your dog is 3 and belongs there?

of training the pup to be the designated driver, down the drain.

Just train him to wear sunglasses, fedora and trenchcoat. The bouncers will never know the difference.

Patio is outside, dogs poop outside. Meh

WAG WEDNESDAYS WITH SHULTZ’S GUEST HOUSE*
Shultz’s Guest House, a dog rescue based out of Dedham, MA, will bring a variety of puppies to meet and play with visitors to connect them with information on fostering and adoption. In 2018, Wag Wednesdays at The Patios resulted in more than 200 applications and nearly 30 pups being placed with their forever families.

In our office, someone would run through yelling PUPPY TIME!!!! and we'd all walk over for puppy time.

At least one of those adoptions resulted.

Rules against domestic animals are pretty much the rule in the food service industry. Do they make sense? Maybe, maybe not, but somehow being blindsided by this is surprising for anyone who might have worked in a restaurant.

Have you ever been with a corgi after it's had a few? Dogs can not hold their liquor and most of them are sloppy drunks.

My bet: This isn't about puritanism, or nanny-state-ism, or anything other than someone having failed to make a required campaign contribution somewhere.

We see these types of decisions all the time. Someone said "wait, there are all these dogs...and alcohol...that's just waiting for someone to make a bad decision and all hell will break loose...and they'll ask why I would have allowed it!". Nevermind that the city has puppies on The Patio on Wednesdays in the summer...or that the Liberty has been doing this for months without even a whiff of an issue...or that this isn't a dog-fighting ring full of pitbulls and Budweiser that they're breaking up.

It's just easier to say "no" and have the status quo where you're on safer ground than to try something different, add even a hint of risk, and stand by your decision at the time.

And if I had a dollar for every stupid fight I’ve been in with customers who think I’m trying to pull some sort of power move by not allowing their dog on the patio, or a water bottle for their dog, or anything else pertaining to their fur baby. Look, it get it not everyone loves dogs and yes some people are allergic to them. But ffs Boston we paltry serfs are intelligent enough to handle this on our own. I’ve been screamed at, spat on, and sworn at for not allowing dogs within the restaurant fencing for the patio. Make like Elsa and let it f*cking go.

The problem is that dogs are EXPECTED at these events and the rules are clear.

Sorry that you have to put up with assholes, but your apples are not these oranges. This is EXPLICITLY an event where dogs are welcomed.

He's talking about his experience with douchey dog owners. I've seen a million of them.

My opinion is they'd be even more douchetastic if they thought they had the run of the place. Or were suddenly denied the run after having it.

If I were a guest at the hotel I'd have no problem having a drink on the patio if all the dogs were well behaved.

I like well-trained dogs and considerate owners.

I like unicorns too. And chances I'll see any of the above are about the same, sadly.

"...concerned with serving drinks when there are dogs present"
Are they afraid the dogs will try to get served?

I do not understand how this is different from people dining with their dogs at outdoor tables at the many restaurants around the city. I don't expect nor try to bring my dog inside any establishment where food is being prepared/eaten but I really enjoy bringing her and eating outside when the weather is nice. It's great socialization and practice for my 9mo old pup who is still learning.

But the places that let you do that aren't necessarily following health code.

They have a "doggo entrance" for their patio.

Mystic welcomes dogs indoors and has a menu where dog treats are $0 because "we don't take money from dogs".

If you click the Globe story link now, it says that the drinking with the doggos is back on for Wednesday.

The hotel did not apply for a variance this year. Doggos are expected to be welcome back as early as tomorrow weather permitting.

The City of Boston is concerned...

Perhaps the city of Boston should concern itself with more important issues.

I had breakfast a few years ago in the Dining Room in a very nice hotel in Luxembourg. At the table across from me a woman and a Welsh Corgi [on a pillow] were breakfasting together.

I've also seen many dogs and their care-givers dining in nice bistros and cafés on L’Avenue Des Champs-Elysées in Paris -- dogs often sitting at the table not just at the feet of the people

Liberty's problem is clearly some Kat Fanatic in Boston Licensing who just hates people and pups who just want to “Laissez les bons temps rouler" as they say in New Orleans --- where people and pups dine together outdoors in cafés without any comments or issues

or see the following in Virginia Beach, Virginia
