Police say man was walking around Egleston Square with a loaded gun in his fanny pack

Boston Police report gang-unit officers told to be on the lookout for a Chelsea man with a violent record who was possibly armed with a gun found him around 10 p.m. yesterday on Chilcott Place, off Washington Street in Jamaica Plain:

Officers exited their vehicle and approached the male who immediately turned his back to officers before walking away from the vehicle. The male, who was wearing a fanny pack, quickened his pace and began sprinting away from the officers. Officers pursued the male, who jumped over several fences in an attempt to evade them. After briefly losing sight of the male, additional officers arrived on scene and set up a perimeter. The male was located in the bed of a pickup truck in the rear of 16 Chilcott Place. Officers placed the male in custody after a brief struggle. Officers observed the male to no longer be wearing the fanny pack or his shoes. As officers retraced the suspect’s path of flight, they located his sneakers in close proximity to the fanny pack. Inside of the fanny pack, officers located a Glock 19 Gen 4 SYP936 9mm firearm loaded with fifteen rounds of live ammunition.

Semaj Leary, 25, currently of Chelsea and formerly of Dorchester, was charged with unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, third offense, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of a large-capacity firearm, police say.

Police are quite familiar with Leary. In 2015, he was charged with shooting up a Roxbury playground - while awaiting trial on a charge of assault and battery.

Innocent, etc.

Everybody is screaming about harsher gun laws these days. Why is nobody mentioning harsher sentences for existing gun laws?

MA has harsh sentences. DAs and judges don't enforce them thanks to throwing around plea deals like bills in a strip club.

It's easier politically to pick on without consequences the small number of lawful gun owners in MA than it is to deal with the patronage empire behind DAs and judges.

I feel bad for the police. They keep arresting the same people only to find them walking around without a care in the world doing the same criminal acts over and over again.

This unfortunately is out of scope in the gun control debate. It is really insanity that it isn’t brought up by the people in power.

Imagine mandatory maximum sentences for unlawful firearm offenses. Try enforcing the law for one year. Experiment?

Let this continue and maybe the good people will be forced to run for office.

I can't find the result. Or the prior assault charge?

I guess it's possible there was not enough evidence to convict, or whatnot, but damn...

Or were they those light-up shoes sometimes seen on toddlers and apparently, coke dealers in the 90s?
