...then they get into a nice liberal college.
https://forward.com/opinion/433082/i-was-protested-at-bard-college-for-b...

"When I was asked to speak at last week’s conference on racism and anti-Semitism at Bard College’s Hannah Arendt Center, I think my heart actually skipped a beat...But we’re not even talking about Israel,” I said to the conference organizers. “How does that make sense?”
"My concern was met with an explanation of the College’s policy towards protesters. The center’s leadership, and the two Bard College deans attending the conference, seemed to have no particular plan to handle what was fixing to become an ugly disruption of Jews trying to discuss anti-Semitism. Berkowitz told us that there would be added security, but the security officers were not allowed to remove the students."

Can't touch the students. The BDS/Palestinian thing seems to be all over liberal colleges. Bard College. Nice. Maybe Steely Dan had it right.

If you're unable to see the difference between some teenagers in a suburban town posting about gassing Jews and college-level debates about BDS, that suggests to me that it's not so much the anti-Semitism that bothers you as it is you're just trying to score some political points.

I don't think it helps reduce anti-semitism much to turn a blind eye to it when we agree with the general political stance of the anti-semites.

We really ought to acknowledge that anti-semitism is currently as much of a problem on the left as it is on the right. This problem has been building for years. If it is at the point when Jews cannot talk about anti-semitism at the Hannah Arendt center, it is a significant problem we shouldn't ignore.

In this case, the speaker was protested and prevented from speaking not when she was at the panel about Zionism (the speaker invited the protesters to come back to the panel about Zionism), or even a panel about Israel, but when she and two other Jews were presenting a panel about anti-semitism. Anti-semitism is the specific thing the speakers were prevented from talking about.

“Don’t you see that?” I asked. Didn’t they see that protesting Jews over Israel when they are not even talking about Israel is racist? Didn’t they understand that saying we were responsible for the behavior of the Israeli Jews just because we shared their ethnicity was racist? That making every conversation with Jews about Israel is racist?”

“The conversation about anti-Semitism is already inherently about Israel,” one of the students archly explained, repeating a deeply anti-Semitic trope that has been voiced across the spectrum from David Duke to Louis Farrakhan to Jeremy Corbyn’s supporters. Right-wing anti-Semites see any accusation of anti-Semitism as a Jewish conspiracy to take away the rights of whites, while left-wing anti-Semites sees the same accusation as an attempt to silence Palestinians.

Perhaps stupid bored suburban schoolkids who think they're anonymous will learn better. We have a chance with them. When the problem includes full-grown academics who stand by while Jews are dehumanized right in front of them, it's worse.

“The next time someone says, ‘What have you done to help Jews as anti-Semitism has spiked across the nation, as Jews have been murdered at their place of worship and Orthodox Jews get beaten to a pulp day after day in Brooklyn,’ you can say, ‘I sat idly by as Jews were protested for trying to talk about anti-Semitism. I allowed a Jewish woman to be held accountable — because of her ethnicity — for the actions of a country halfway around the world where she can’t even vote. I egged the protest on, in fact. And then I went to a party.’”

I don't like what's going on in Israel either, especially with Netanyahu. But this is about what's going on here in America. You just sent your girl to college. Is she going to be free to tell people she's Jewish without being attacked for it? Do you care?

W#hat happened in Framingham was just plain wrong and must be condemned by any decent person.

So. I condemn it. As far as Trump, he's the president that moved the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. His support of Israel is unconditional.

You’re tipping your hand there.

The whole point is that antisemitism and Israel are not the same topic. Conflating them is itself antisemitic.

Just as it is possible to be not antisemitic and simultaneously not support the government of Israel and its actions, it is possible to support the government of Israel and its actions and still be antisemitic.

But you can’t insist the two are a package deal without being antisemitic.

Trump moved the embassy as one of his sops to the ultra-Christian Right that wants a nuclear war.

Nuclear war? No Christian would want that. But that the way the current crop of end of the world believe. Nuclear bombs will be the literal manifestation of the horror of Revelation.

Trump's comprehension of the tensions and dynamics of international politics are as deep as his ability to never let any of his businesses go bankrupt. The fact that he has sacrificed the Middle East to Putin and Erdogan (but mostly Putin) is evidence enough.

The political gamesmanship of Trump regarding moving the US embassy has NOTHING to do with the well being of anyone in the Middle East. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING Trump does is for the increase of his wealth and power, no matter how much harm Trump causes.

So I'm gonna say his support of Israel is pretty...conditional.

He's not fooling any Jewish person with half of brain.

When some right-wing apartheid fan like Bari Weiss gets involved, you should know to wait for the real story to come out.

Berkowitz does note that in 12 years of sponsoring talks... every speaker who students have sought to de-platform is Jewish.

Yup, totally no antisemitism going on there!

That's no excuse for Ungar-Sargon lying repeatedly about what happened. The activists were protesting someone who says things like

"all Palestinians do is breed, bleed, and advertise their misery"

Stuff like that will rightly get you some flack in a public forum.
As some of the protesters were Jewish, that tends to put a lie to the idea that the protesters motivations were anti-semitic.

"If you're unable to see the difference between some teenagers in a suburban town posting about gassing Jews and college-level debates about BDS"

FTA, 'There was some support for us from the audience, and Berkowitz, the conference organizer, and the Bard deans did apologize later, and even managed to usher the students out, finally, when during the Q&A and they chanted so loudly that we couldn’t proceed.'

The use of the heckler's veto to silence a conversation about anti Semitic actions is, well, anti Semitic. The college discussion was not about BDS.

Whataboutism is now in Strawman Form!

Is cognitive dissonance turbocharged whataboutism the new superweapon of Trumpistan?

"Whataboutism, strawman, Trump". Very original Swirl, all that was missing was an arbitrary anecdote about your cousin's pediatrician having a firsthand experience related to the topic at hand.

We will fund it.

Why? He could censor me, but I raise an issue. If they get away with it young, they turn into the type of anti Semitic cretins that populate the ctrl-left.

Fund it? Hell, I should be rewarded for the page hits.

Because your dog-whistling bigotry is appalling and no decent person wants to read it. Your "issues" are fraught with distortions, selective context-snipping and intellectual dishonesty. You are a waste of time and bytes.

Being anti-Israel is not the same as being anti-semitic. I am a Jew and I do not support the apartheid state that is Israel.

because digging up an opinion piece from perennial whiner, Batya Unger, about her experience at Bard College (which, if you didnt know, is the Ying to Liberty University's Yang) is completely off-topic and reeks of "whataboutism".

Of course the kids cannot be named because they're minors. But the parents, who have presumably f*cked up their kids to the extent that they were capable of creating "Kill the Jews" page, should be named, ostracized, and exposed.

Stephen Miller was always a complete loser asshole, despite the fact that his family seems to have tried to keep him from becoming that way.

Seems to me like these kids need to be required to learn some important stuff that they somehow missed - and maybe their parents should be required to join them in that journey. And do some shovelling for the city when the snow hits. The more work the better - and the more their parents have to miss work to deal with this, the better.

Where in your mental gulag would you send them?

Their parents are probably mortified. It's time for a discussion with the kids, and the others at the school, about what that was so awful. Teaching moment.

Bullying in school and humiliating victims further with vicious social media posts. Packs of kids robbing and beating adults on the southwest corridor. Forest Hills and other subway stations overrun and turned into Clockwork Orange. Teachers afraid to teach and police afraid to police.
Our popular movies watched by kids are slasher films or portrayals of madmen who terrorize their victims.
Experts from Academia will defend the actions of delinquents with the explanation that their brains are not fully developed and mediation not punishment is the answer. A wise man once said "Spare the rod spoil the child"and we have a whole generation of spoiled angry children.

How many kids even know what 'kike' means? I'm serious. Aside from maybe Southpark or something. Whenever I see stories about hate graffiti , etc., and slurs are used that typically the vast majority of kids and even adults are, at best vaguely familiar with, it leaves me wondering.

I grew up in places with a lot of Jewish people. I attended schools with Jewish kids; one of them, a Catholic school, had multiple Jewish boys in my class. The non-Jewish boys didn't harrass the Jewish boys for being Jewish. We didn't care. My mom always told me and my siblings to judge people as individuals. If we ever used 'bad' language, slurs, she'd be furious. I never heard my parents use slurs or even things like the F word. I heard my dad say the F word once talking on the phone to someone and I remember it to this day. And I grew up in a lower middle class white family.

I'd be curious to know more (accurate) info on this story. These kind if stories are always hit and run. Never follow-up.

Really, it means there's hope.

But my experience with teenagers has been that if there's some hurtful, derogatory term for somebody else, they will know it. And some of them will use it. So the fact that kids in Framingham (which has a decently sized Jewish population) know and use the words doesn't surprise me in the least (except for the fact that I actually was a reporter there, granted a long time ago, and didn't tend to see much in the way of outright bigotry, but then, I left Framingham before a pair of white supremacists started bellowing about immigrants on the South Side).

And, honestly, as somebody who is Jewish, I know from both personal and family experience that anti-Semitism is neither new nor ever fully eradicated, yes, even here in the enlightened Northeast. We're seeing renewed outbursts of it these days, for reasons I don't really feel like getting into, but it's always been out there.

up
Voting closed 0

At that age, some get it from their parents, some get it from other kids, some get it online. Some really believe it, some are trying to fit in with the other kids.

Sadly, these days there are plenty of places to get these attitudes/behaviors from. Anyone who remembers being a tween should be able to remember doing or saying or thinking things their parents wouldn't approve of - sometimes despite their parents, sometimes to spite their parents.

The article in the Forward that you link to helpfully itself includes a link to a response, in the form of a letter to the editor from the Bard Center for the Study of Hate, who starts out by saying

I have spent more than three decades combating anti-Semitism, 25 of them while working at the American Jewish Committee. I reserved the charge of anti-Semitism for those most deserving – the David Dukes of the world – in order not to cheapen the term. I believe Batya Ungar-Sargon’s take on the student protest at the conference cheapens the term; I was there, and I disagree with both her description and interpretation of what happened.

He then goes on to describe what he witnessed, which does not much resemble what the article describes. Of course he could be lying, but then so could she. I have to say that before I even followed the link I had noticed her pronounced propensity for putting words in other peoples' mouths and ideas in other peoples' heads.

are related. YES. They are siblings in a family of spiritual disease. They are different aspects of the need to have some group to hate, some group to scapegoat, some group to blame.

I purposefully use the word group, not race. Why? Because the term of race is a use of language that validates a belief in psuedo-science of human races.

Getting caught on the hook of the word race, bypasses the roots of group belligerence. What are the roots? The weaknesses of religion, weaknesses of morality and weaknesses of basic education. The roots of this belligerence grow in soils of frustration, resentment and bitterness; in roots of envy and jealousy.

Without addressing the social, and economic and psychological fundamentals of hate, hate will always find soil where it can grow. The particular targets will change. But the force of hate remains so long as our spiritual, social and moral health remain compromised.
