Sometimes it pays to look up

Gargoyle on Wellington Street building

Because when you look up, you see things like the winged figures that guard the doorway to a building on Wellington Street in the South End.

If I'm not mistaken that is a Greek mythological creature called the Griffin.
The irony of your statement, advising bostonians to look up sometimes when they're traveling around Boston buildings is absolutely correct. We should all look up at the various trademarks and symbols that are the upper levels of certain buildings.
I recently looked at the upper levels of the pillars E. Burke School and I notice unknown symbols, designs or I I'm not sure what to call the art work however they were unique. All the years I passed by The Burke High School I never notice them.

They're all over the place. Old buildings downtown are covered with all sorts of Roman, Greek and even Babylonian symbols. Even the Municipal Building in Hyde Park has some.

These are the sorts of details I really wish new construction would include. It adds so much to the appearance of the building, providing something small to find embedded in something big. Even those basic brick patterns that used to be commonplace would be nice.

I'm sure the explanation is that not doing it saves on design and building costs, but using multiple colors of fiber-cement cladding costs money too so I'm not totally sure I buy it.

If you look up at Downtown Crossing there are lion heads on what's left of the original Filenes building facade, and also on the Corner Mall building.

Did somebody mention lions?

These lions with metal rings in their mouths are some of my favorite building ornamentations in the city: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.3527413,-71.0614267,3a,75y,246.96h,113.75t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sB72aBXXtQPKvVTDo6-GYbg!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo1.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DB72aBXXtQPKvVTDo6-GYbg%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D172.90736%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192

They're one story up on a really old building, so I've always wondered what the rings possibly could've been for?
