Flag-waving local Trumpie no longer has street corners to himself
By adamg on Sat, 02/29/2020 - 12:05pm
An area Trump supporter who has spent the last few months standing on Boston-area street corners is now attracting ad-hoc counter-sign holders. Josh Bittker reports this morning:
My kid starts texting me at work that there’s a random protester near our house and he wants to go counter protest and I said don’t antagonize weird people but he did a good job anyway.

Free speech is beautiful.
Free speach
Free speach is great Ageist slurs are not however.
My dog says, "Pish posh."
My dog in the fight is as a boomer. Do I take this "Okay boomer" bit personally? If I did I would be a hypocrite since there was a time in my 20s, criticizing my elders who selfishly and with willful ignorance acted like vultures picking at the flesh of the Earth.
There is saying, "Don't #%@% in your backyard." The so-called boomers have held the power to maintain our world as a verdant paradise. Instead for decades we have feasted on its carcass.
For another perspective
2016 votes by age (Clinton:Trump) (difference)
age 18-29: 58:28 (Clinton +30)
age 30-49: 51:40 (Clinton +11)
50-64: 45:51 (Trump + 6)
65+: 44:53 (Trump +11).
In 2016, the boomers were between age 52 and 70. Had they not voted, we wouldn't have this problem.
(Though technically it would be more accurate simply to say, "thanks, white men," since they voted Trump +30.)

Since many of the policies in dispute are issues of generation equity--environmental damage, family leave, educational access, national debt, capital gains rates, etc--the point is perfectly reasonable.
Old people stole our money, sent us to losing wars, polluted our air, broke our government, called us snowflakes and put on Fuck Your Feelings t-shirts. Okay, boomer?
Deja Vu
"Old people stole our money, sent us to losing wars, polluted our air, broke our government, called us snowflakes and put on Fuck Your Feelings t-shirts. Okay, boomer?"
Boomer here. Talk about deja vu! ("Deja Vu" also a Boomer Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song). That's EXACTLY what we said about the generation that came before us. Remember a little thing called Vietnam? Except they didn't call us "snowflakes". They called us "filthy hippies" and said "is it a boy or is it a girl?".
Ah the good ole days
I remember the fine days when anyone with any sense realized that Vietnam was our failure; a failure 1,353,000 deaths and untold devastated lives. Just to prop up our own political Potemkin Villages. Add the war crimes the US ever generals and politicians never were tried for: war crimes involving the chemicals of napalm and Agent Orange. Oh yea they were the good old days.
Is there any lesson in all this? That in every generation there are cowards, killers, criminals whose screaming political theater is the herald to real horror shows. Whether the Civil War leaders-traitors in the south or the yellow journalism of Hearst.
We're in one of those periods now. It doesn't matter a person's age. Stephen Miller uses immigrants as modern scapegoats; he and his spiritual father of blood and soil can not stop portraying immigrants as a modern parasite sucking the life force from the American body politic. Yet he was born in 1985.
Never seen this before
Gee, the younger generation blaming the older generation for all the problems in the world. I bet that's never happened before.
Wrong conclusion.
Yimby you were SO close to using statistics properly but you failed to mention that in 2016 65+ year olds voted at 70% 45-64 at 66%, 30-44 at 58% and 18-29 at 46%. Further, Boomers make up only about 20% of the population, where Gen X is around 20%, Millennials are about 22%, and Gen Z 27%. SO, its not so much that Boomers voted Trump in but that younger people DIDN"T vote, (I'm looking square at you Millennials and your "wokeness" etc). A whole bunch of you were too busy in 2016 updating your Facebook and posting about useless self-centered crap with a sprinkling of humble brag. Or did you not vote because Bernie did't get the nod so you took you dolls and dishes and went home to binge watch Friends. Quit whining about Boomers and get involved, get one friend or family member (preferably in a swing state) to register and get them to do the same with their friends and family, and for the love of GOD, VOTE!. Sign me, a Boomer who didn't vote for "you know who".
And there it is.
A boomer clutching their pearls who then goes on to use "wokeness" and millennial as pejoratives and then even further to invoke supposed stereotypes.
In 2016 I voted Bernie in the primary and Clinton in the general, if I even need to bother mentioning that, and I vote in every election.
Do you notice a trend?
People get more conservative the older they get. Those 30 year olders will be voting to the right in 30 years’ time.
lol the oldest millennials
lol the oldest millennials are pushing 40 and are still by and large incredibly leftist. the correlation is not age-alignment, it's wealth-alignment --- and because millennials and zoomers have been so fucked over by this late capital hellscape custom designed by boomers to eeke out every bit of wealth they can, we're by and large still broke as shit, despite being well into middle age. and thus, still pretty liberal
The data doesn't support
If your sample size is small, your conclusions aren't valid. And given the lamentably low turnout in 2016, your sample size is REAL small.
The main data was already given
But if I were industrious, I could probably find exit polls going back to at least 1972 that will show that the older one gets, the more conservative their voting patterns are, meaning that those Trump voters in 2016 were most likely McGovern voters in 1972 (not all of them, but statistically the cohort would go that way.)
FWIW
The people most likely to say "ok, Boomer" are the ones most excited about voting for one on Tuesday in Massachusetts.
Maybe the Boomers shouldn't have made fun of the Millennials for the past 20 years if they care about age related slurs.
Would that boomer be Warren?
Because Bernie isn't a boomer. Neither is Bloomberg or Biden
They are silent generation - born before or early in WW II. Also a small generation like Gen-X was, for obvious reasons (Great Depression and WW II)
Warren is a baby boomer - born in 1949.
True
Although I'll lump Bernie in with the Boomer crowd since he reflects the progressive mindset of the 60s. (Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.)
It's a bit ironic that the generation previously known for having the most open minds is now being criticized for being too self centered.
As a Gen-xer I'm happy to be cynical and ignored by the masses.
Now being criticized for being self-centered?
Are you too young to remember when said generation self-christened themselves as the ME GENERATION?
Common decency
I do not see boomer as an age-related slur, just solely a generational slur. If the little boy was truly an age bigot, he would have went after Pelosi who appears to be an Interbellum.
I get called a boomer here often yet I am not, but I take the compliment even though I only partially earned it.
I think the boomers had the common decency to not make fun of Millenials the same way it is not cool to make fun of the handicapped... and maybe a little fear that the Millenials call their parents for help when someone makes fun of them.
Not a boomer...a pre-boomer
Bernie is actually too old to be a boomer. The baby boom began in 1946. He was born in September of 1941. His birth predates the Pearl Harbor attack and US declaration of war in WWII. Maybe Howard Zinn mentioned that war in your history book, millennial.
Fuck that. Boomers have
Fuck that. Boomers have ruined the planet and ran up the national debt and left younger generations with the bill. Why the hell should they escape any condemnation for their greed?
Yes
except you should say "have continued to ruin the planet, and run up the national debt, and left younger generations with an even larger bill than their parents left to them." Those younger generations will do the same. The older you get, the more crimes you accumulate responsibility for; it's the natural order of things.
About 50% of the US population is between 15 and 55. Do you think they're all pedestrians?
Why should you escape any condemnation
...for being a man?
You have oppressed women, created and perpetuated rape culture, enshrined the patriarchy, made extra money that was stolen from women, created a broken political system and left women to clean up the mess. Why the hell should you escape any condemnation for your greed?
(anyone want to bet if he a)gets it and shuts up, b)gets it and blusters or c)his head simply explodes?)
I agree. Ad-hominem ageist
I agree. Ad-hominem ageist insults are not the Left I'd like to be a part of. We should envision something better.
Totes adorbs.
Signs
Do people standing holding signs (of any political persuasion) really think they're accomplishing anything? I think that every time I see those clusters of hacks holding signs on the sides of streets for local politicians in the days leading up to an election. It seems like such a waste of time. Do those signs actually sway anybody? This isn't 1882.
Yeah, they do
THIS particular set of signs, probably not. Campaign signs...anecdotal, but people seeing campaign standouts (particularly for an underdog candidate) are more likely to actually show up and vote. I couldn't tell you if it's the reminder effect or the "hey other people support this candidate, we might have a chance" effect, but it's good either way.
Ooooh
Can we have a suggested counter-sign-saying list?
Oldie but goodie
<---- I'm With Stupid
Vote
For Pedro!
Brilliant
The Trumper is bent over, crooked and weighted down. The younger fellow stands straight, willing to stand up for right. He recognizes the failures of his preceding generation; the comparison symbolically declares where much of the responsibility for the mess of our local world lies.
Overly simplistic, but this is a photo.
Overly simplistic because boomers also led the way to civil rights, environmental protection, fighting for what is good and right, which other boomers strive to destroy. Boomers and descendants refuse to let the cast of an undivine tragedy try to turn the nation into a dogfight of powerful versus everyone else.
But as a synthesis, the symbolism is spot on.
you forgot the memorial
and the stone it's been placed in
the eons old rock with bronze plaque honoring (what appears to be) soldiers is on the side of the young man who's face is slightly blurred (he knows how fleeting this moment in time is)
as the old guy clowning for the camera drifts off, waving his authoritarian flags of law enforcement worship, tilting at windmills he sees on FOX
Didn’t you already post this?
Didn’t you already post this?
Same Trumpie
But different protester, different location.
Layin' low?
The Trump guy bears a curious resemblance to both Bernie Sanders and Whitey Bulger.
OK Boomer?
Many may consider that phrase to be an example of ageism.
The correct phrase to use would be 10-4 Dinosaur.
