Now the cleanup

Public Works employee removing graffiti

Boston Public Works all over Tremont and Beacon doing cleanup and graffiti removal this morning. Source.

A group of people plan to meet - socially distanced, of course - at Park Street station at 9 a.m. to help clean up the area. Volunteers will gather at Park Street and Boylston stations with broom and bags around 9 a.m. to begin help cleaning up the mess left behind by rampaging last night.

Jonathan Berk requests:

Please bring brooms, trash bags, gloves and any other cleaning materials that may be helpful. Please wear your mask.

Chris Malo, meanwhile, plans to start at Boylston Station:

To show my support for the cause I will be out with a broom and trash bags in the morning. I invite anyone to join

People love to reminisce about how the city was great when it was rundown and unsafe. But when it looks to be headed in that direction again, suddenly it doesn't sound so good.

Boston will survive this just like it has all the other instances of riots and looting over the decades. If things get really bad, they'll just raze the area and start over like they did with the West End.

Really? The ice machine cleaner for the ice where people skate, because you know Floyd George and all, really?

I am so glad to see the occupants of the Allston apartments from the early 90's who talked to me about smashing the system but instead did a lot of E and ate Riley's even though they said they were trying to be vegan now have their kids talking about smashing the system and raiding Men's Warehouse. You've come a long way baby.

That Allston story never happened.

I know your infantile mind can't absolutely comprehend that things happened like that once.

You keep trying to stop at red lights and stop signs so we don't have to "mourn" you on these pages someday. Thanks.

Keep making up anecdotes to support whatever narrative you're grinding on for this week.

You have no substance, no original ideas, and no back up.

Just like all the other Allston Anarchists who played Trotskyite-Lite last night but then went back to their slumlord owned overpriced apartments and realized that the if they go out again tonight to loot, the BPD is going to put their heads on pikes.

So you, like them will sit around, play on twitter, watch a little How I Met Your Mother and wonder why the immigrants on the third floor apartment on Chester Street laugh at you behind your backs with your "anarchy".

Get bent trike boy.

Weird I don't remember calling you an entitled fascist ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also weird to think I support anarchy in anyway, gosh you're really whiffing on these insults bud.

Do I just say "Ok Boomer" and watch the temper tantrum continue?

If too many white people show up it could get out of hand and they will run amok, right Adam?
As Navin R. Johnson said
"Lord loves a workin' man and don't trust whitey;"

I, for one, am really looking forward to more UHub race-baiting headlines like last night's. Those are super helpful.

But, hey, clicks and comments.

Troublenakers show up and ruin a peaceful protest.
But I dont have a fancy journalism degree, so what do I know?

up
Voting closed 0

I went to one of them there fancy-pants "liberal arts" schools that considered journalism to be a "trade" or "craft" or something and therefore not a "liberal art" and so not only didn't offer journalism classes but wouldn't let you take a journalism class at one of the other local colleges that you could take other classes at (and then somebody gave them money and voila, now they have a whole journalism department).

Yes, of course, now that explains everything, right? Happy to have helped.

I'd ask for a refund.
Actually strike that, Your headline is how the trade is practiced these days so it must be taught that way.
My mistake.

If you actually read behind the headline you'd find a well written story which had more breaking news than any other outlet in Boston. Twitter is not a reliable source of news apart from a very small number reputable people.

Furthermore, the headline was fine. But if minority leaders complain about it, I'd certainly change my mind.

up
Voting closed 0

I couldn't possibly have an opinion on the headline which differs from yours .
I see a race baiting clickbait headline , and to be fair it works.

up
Voting closed 0

Clearly that headline is going to incite a bunch of people to go loot tonight.

/S

You can have whatever opinion you want as can I. Since I'm not in a racial minority, I put a lot more credence on what minorities think is or isn't racial bating. I don't need a bunch of white guys telling me the suggestion their race is behind a negative event is offensive.

up
Voting closed 1

Why is that?

up
Voting closed 0

The minorities tend to note that fact periodically, particularly on stories involving race.

I didn't see any of those posters complaining about the headline, although I stopped looking at the thread when it was clear people just wanted to complain about the headline.

up
Voting closed 0

I see, do you have the official minority opinion posting rules?
Is there rules for how the majority post opinions as well. or is it just for the "minorities"?

I think the headline is race baiting, that is my opinion and it came from my brain all on my own and it's not based on my skin color or gender.

up
Voting closed 1

You don't think your race might possibly have had some effect on what you define as race-baiting?

up
Voting closed 0

Although I fail to see how that headline was "baiting" anyone. And it's not clickbait if there's an actual story with new information behind the headline, which there was.

Explain why you feel so offended by the suggestion the looting was being caused largely by out of town whites?

Voting closed 0

The same as saying black people are looting is irrelevant, what point is headlining the race ?
If you read it again and dont see what the author was doing with that headline nothing I say will change your mind....which is fine, you can have your own opinion and I can have mine.
It wasnt that the looting was caused by out of town whites but because they were white is how I read it.
I've seen too many headlines on this site over the years to change my opinion on the reason, it wasn't a point of information headline .
Dont forget the author posted this to a response on the original thread saying he wanted the head line to be "Fucking white people run amok downtown .."

Do you think he would write those words about any other race? That said, he owns the site and can say whatever he likes and I can comment anyway I like, and sometimes he will delete comments he doesn't like....fair enough?

I think Adam is furious that whites, particularly from the suburbs, are trying to co-op a moment of angry and frustration by the black community into an excuse to cause mayhem for their own enjoyment.

The headline contained commentary but it was neither incorrect or race baiting. It reflected the anger of an actual Boston resident and reporter who cares deeply about the city.

That's how I read it, at least.

And I appreciate the civility, it's a rarity these days.

Adam wasn't pissed off at white people in general; he was pissed off at those who exploited a peaceful protest to cause chaos.

Voting closed 0

Yes, that's how it meant it. There may be things about me to self-loathe, but my skin color has never been one of them.

I saw video of what was a peaceful march and vigil and then I turned on my scanner to hear all hell breaking loose downtown. And then I started tweeting what I was hearing, so I had no idea who was doing what - just that there was a war all of a sudden along Tremont Street (one thing about Boston cops is that they are usually incredibly calm sounding on the radio, even if they've just been in a crash, they were definitely not calm Sunday night, at least at the start, when they seemed to be outnumbered).

And then I started looking at video and photos from actual reporters on the scene (two things there: Bravo to the reporters and camerapeople stationed in the middle of it all, you did great work, and bravo to BPD for not copying cops elsewhere and beating up/shooting at reporters). And the initial images from downtown, while, yes, they showed black people, were primarily of young, white people (at least the ones I saw)

And to be honest, that's when I went "Fucking white people!" because this was happening all across the country and now it was happening here - black people leading protests about something that affects them immediately and constantly, in a way most white people have never experienced (have you ever worried about getting shot by a cop at a traffic stop or having a Karen call the cops on you in a park? Me neither), and here they have expressly said they want to demonstrate peacefully and they do so and then a bunch of white punks go and destroy it all and coopt their message and turn it into one of mindless nihilism, which only feeds into the creeping fascism coming out of Washington.

See in particular this tweet by Segun Idowu. If you don't know who he is, he's probably the single biggest reason Boston cops now have bodycams (well, some of them, anyway). He fought for like two years against both the department and some city councilors for them. So he's been involved and invested in these sort of issues for awhile now.

But, no, I don't hate all white people.

you spout a never ending fountain of vaguely right-wing bullshit that can be easily disproved with 4 seconds of googling, lick boots like they’re going out of style, and generally act like the kind of asshole who would have had his jaw broken by now if his dad wasn’t sergeant at the local precinct.

Any other idiotic bad-faith questions we can answer for you?

I rode my bike downtown around 8:30 this morning to see what the fuss what all about. On my way there, I noticed that Pure Oasis, the new pot shop in Grove Hall, and the Wine and Cheese shop in Savin Hill had one smashed window each. A police cruiser was standing guard at each location. That was the only thing I noticed outside of the Downtown area; even Nubian Square looked pretty much as usual.

I rode around Newbury St, Boylston and Downtown-Crossing since those were reported as the center of the action. There were some broken windows, tags, and some evidence of looting such as coat hangers on the sidewalk, and I'll guesstimate 20 stores where things got knocked to the ground and stolen. Urban outfitters at Newbury and Mass Ave probably had the most window breakage. I enjoyed the irony since that preppy store brand used to have a faux broken window at its (now closed) Harvard Square storefront. Maybe two dozen stores looked like they had been boarded up preemptively. Plenty of people at work doing clean up. It looked like the result of a handful of looters getting excited for a while but not exactly the end of the World.

Save for the broken windows, I have seen the city looking much messier on the evening of the Boston Marathon or after a sport victory parade. Provided that this (the Downtown chaos) was a one-time event, it will be largely forgotten by 99% of people in a few weeks from now. There are much bigger and lasting things to worry about.

By 8:30 cleaning was already happening. I live on the Theater District side of the Common, and walked my dog at 6. At 6 the city already had street sweepers and workers out, plus a few residents like myself pitching in to clean up. I do 100% agree though, the amount of trash this morning is less than after a victory parade and mainly looked like trash that blew around from tipped over cans. However, broken glass was a plenty and significantly more tagging/graffiti was around.

I can't tell you how helpful your post was in soothing my concerns about the aftermath of the looting and vandalism that occurred last night. I strongly support the protests, but found the looting and vandalism highly discouraging and concerning.

I don't want the city I love (already been made to feel surreal - thanks 'rona) to be covered in a 'shield' of plywood to prevent co opters of a valid protest movement from doing more damage.

I too hope that this was a one time instance that will fade into a distant memory.
