Some 200 Boston restaurants now have approval to add or expand outdoor seating

Mayor Walsh announced today that 200 Boston restaurants have won approval for outdoor seating - and can begin using the parking spaces out front if they don't have enough room on neighboring property or the sidewalk.

Another 300 restaurants still have applications pending before the Boston Licensing Board, he said at a press conference this morning.

Although many of the restaurants were able to start serving outdoors on Monday, restaurants in the North End, at least officially, are not supposed to start serving outdoors until tomorrow, so the city can work out issues involved in the city's most restaurant-packed neighborhoods.

Because restaurants still cannot serve people indoors due to Covid-19, the city has waived fees and streamlined licensing requirements for restaurants to try to survive by adding outdoor seating.

Walsh did not mention whether the city is looking at turning any streets into temporary pedestrian areas.

Great. Hopefully this year and every year. It's pleasant to live in a city where you can have a nice meal in the open air. We only have a few months of the year to do it in.
