Snakes on a Plain

The call to Samuel L. Jackson has been canceled: The ball python that somebody spotted in Parley Vale park in Jamaica Plain yesterday is now safely at the MSPCA.

Erik Goulding reports in the Jamaica Plain Facebook group that his daughter Eleanor, 7, spotted the snake today and that they and a kind woman who happened to be there at the time gathered the danger noodle in a pillow case and walked it over to Angell.

We *walked* it over to Angell... I didn’t bring the car because what chance did we have of finding a snake in a big open park? Which is how we came to be carrying a python in a cardboard FedEx box, lined with a pillowcase covered in ballerinas, down Centre Street at 3:30 in the afternoon. Luckily the snake seemed to enjoy the ride—it was a beautiful sunny day, after all.

Anyway, the snake has a new home, JP is safe from the scourge of a small non-venomous snake, and Eleanor is available for interviews, and is more than happy to correct any gaps in your knowledge of herpetology, in the way only a 2nd-grader who went to two weeks of nature camp can do.

Did y'all leave your snake stick and an oven mitt in the park?

Our third rescuer had the foresight to bring a snake stick and an oven mitt, as she has worked with this kind of snake before. We probably left them on the ground in the excitement... if you happened to pick them up, I am sure she would be very appreciative

I sent you a message, not sure if it went through. You can find the mitt and stick on the low wall.

They are the golden retrievers of the snake world.

was surprisingly well-mannered, considering how rudely we interrupted its afternoon. As his name implies, he mostly just curled up in a ball and watched us carefully. Luckily the little guy was totally healthy and very well-fed... he either escaped recently, or adapted well to a chipmunk-and-mouse diet in the wild.

(BTW if anyone on Parley Ave is missing a python, let me know!)
