Election roundup: Essaibi George gets the nod from Gross; Libertarians jump into council race

Former Police Commissioner William Gross endorsed Annissa Essaibi George today.

Throughout her time as a City Councilor, she has shown up, at all hours of the day and night, and met people exactly where they are - in the neighborhood, at community events or civic meetings, and even at the station - to have thoughtful, honest conversations

Gross formally declared himself an AEG'er during a tour of Mattapan Square.

The Greater Boston Libertarian Party, which exists, plans a demonstration at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 21 in Mattapan Square, along with City Council candidates Jacob Ureña, Domingos DaRosa and Kevin Reed in "protest of the City of Boston's many aggressions against black and brown business owners."

Michelle Wu talked about her time at Harvard Law, including with Prof. Elizabeth Warren, as well as about campaign issues, in an online press conference with Harvard and other Boston-area student journalists.

State Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz, who earlier had endorsed David Halbert for one of the four at-large council seats, yesterday endorsed Ruthzee Louijeune for one of the seats, leaving her with two open spots on her at-large endorsement card:

Whether as an attorney representing families in housing court or an advocate for our kids in Boston Public Schools, Ruthzee has always used her expertise to give back to the community that raised her. She has the values, the smarts, and the conviction to meet the urgency of this moment and help lead us toward a more equitable Boston.

a candidate? Hopefully all voters look at the candidates' records and where they stand on issues.

It is a signal to her donor network that if they send campaign contributions to these people then they are in her good graces. Money for them is support for me. I'll smile favorably the next time you come into my office looking for something.

It has nothing to do with the voters.

It can help you judge candidate trustworthiness if they are making conflicting promises to different people. If they are pledging support for your issues while getting endorsements from big shots who oppose them you should probably keep looking.

It's hard to find that information about some candidates, and some elections. An endorsement can be an indicator of a candidate's likely positions--it would be unlikely for the same candidate to be endorsed by both Charlie Baker and Elizabeth Warren, for example. \

Bear in mind that no candidates start out with a track record in politics. If you want a chance of new people being elected to office (if only to replace incumbents who die, retire, or move away), you'll be voting for people whose records don't tell you much that matters for this.

If I'm hiring a plumber or looking for a new doctor, I can ask around and find someone who has a good reputation as a plumber or as a doctor--but that wouldn't tell me whether I wanted to vote for either of them for the state legislature. A competent doctor, a competent plumber, a competent person with any skillset might effectively push for policies I disagreed with,

The person for who a Gross endorsement is going to matter won't be aware or care about that video. Their perception of who Gross is so different than yours that it's not apples to apples. As noted by Vicki, it's all signalling.

The person "for whom a Gross endorsement is going to matter" to in a positive sense won't care or would probably applaud the fascist behavior in that video.

The person who is not familiar with Essaibi George and is aware of the type of BPD behavior exhibited in that video might very well be negatively swayed by an endorsement of the man in charge of those troops.

I think you are way over-estimating the negative impression people have (right or wrong) about Gross. I also don't think if I went down to the Dunks in Roslindale and started asking people about 'that police brutality video' that anyone would know what I was talking about. I don't think this is a majorly progressive city, more like a 55/45 split.

You're trying to put words in my mouth. I don't know if the endorsement of the ex-chief of police will help or hurt a candidate in this day and age, and you don't either,

I'm putting the video out there because I think it needs to be aired more widely, especially in light of certain candidates embracing the BPD. You can say "it doesn't matter, blah blah blah." But if more people see it, maybe it will.

When you wrote "Is this supposed to help Ms. Essaibi George?" on a post about Gross endorsing her, I assume that's what you were primarily referring to, not one specific video which hasn't been widely covered as a news story.

Have a blessed day.
