South Boston could get a Taco Bell

The Boston Licensing Board next week hears a proposal for a Taco Bell Cantina at 449 West Broadway in Perkins Square - a long vacant gap between two other buildings.

Taco Bell Cantina is an attempt by the chain, long noted for its discount offerings, to compete with Chipotle, Qdoba and similar chains that feature dining areas with art-like wall hangings. Don't worry, though: Other Taco Bell Cantinas feature the same "Mexican inspired food" as the more traditional Taco Bells, such as the Crunchwrap Supreme.

Unlike the existing fancy-shmancy Taco Bell Cantina on Comm. Ave. near BU, however, the proposed South Boston location would not serve alcohol, at least not initially - its franchisee is seeking only a food-serving license for what would be a 14-seat restaurant. It is seeking a closing time of 2 a.m., which would give many patrons of nearby bars a shot at getting a taco-ish food item for the ride or walk home.

The licensing board's hearings begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

need for a quick meal. Yeesh: gross in the eating, and I felt nauseated for a good couple of hours afterward. I would have to be in much more dire circumstances next time to repeat that experience.

I mean, at least when I eat at a national chain burger joint (which happens maybe once a year), I enjoy the food when I'm eating it: the severe regret only follows in about half an hour.

I once ate in a Taco Bell. It was at Downtown Crossing in the food court of the short-lived and ill-fated Lafayette Mall in the 1980s. I was immediately sorry and have never eaten in one again.

By the way, that mall also had a Chess King. Remember them? I once bought some clothes there and also felt immediately sorry. That mall was just bad news in general. :-)

Chess King made me giggle. That is from the way back machine Mr. Peabody. I haven't thought of that store in years. I think they had one down the plaza too

Is there like a special chapel in the Boston area that you go to and purge your sins when you have to eat at a place like Taco Bell or some other fast food joint?

A timer starts the minute I have that first bite of burger, and 30 minutes later, my stomach pipes up: "WTF are you doing to me? Dude: you know better!"

There are some exceptions to the cheap-chain-burger rule where I don't feel sickened afterwards. The plant-based Impossible Whopper. The ShackBurger. An In-N-Out burger if not done up in that weird, extravagant off-menu style, though my last one of those was years ago.

Local purveyors like Tasty Burger, WuBurger and Lee's don't bother me. I miss Flat Patties, my favorite of the style. I guess it must be shit-quality beef that hurts me.

I will more often indulge in just McD's fries and maybe a shake. Those don't whup me too bad.

Well when you are 30% beef.. your body probably doesn't like that slurry they use to make the filler so its 100% product.

Taco Bell, taking one of the easiest, cheapest, and fastest foods (tacos) and making it horrible. There was no need except corporate greed. A Tina's Burrito from the frozen section at Market Basket, cooked correctly, has more flavor and nutritional value than Taco Bell.

I love fast food but I don't see the appeal of Taco Bell, unless you're a drunk or stoner (and don't @ me, its the only time I will eat it).

Taco Bell.. the only food besides KFC that smells the same going in and coming out. (Don't @ me either, its only gross because it's true)

Sorry Taco Bell is beneath you. People do like fast food, and for the longest time the only chain in South Boston was Burger King. There is a large population that has a taste for a soft taco from Taco Bell!

I never got sick at the Chipotle when I went there, but I remember getting ill from the Qdoba in Harvard Square (mainly of the gastric kind). I haven't been to either place in years, and it wouldn't surprise me if both places closed.

Taco Bell isn't beneath me - I just haven't been there in years. It's...okay (and better when the food is hot) but not as good as the local shops, which will give you fresher stuff for a lot less.

Both Chipotle and Qdoba in Harvard Square have indeed closed!

I worked at a Taco Bell / KFC Multistore (with a buffet!) in the early 90s and it was better than taco bell is today. The quality has just gone down hill.
