West Roxbury: The Trumpiest of Boston neighhborhoods

Stupid sign in West Roxbury

Ed. election-night note: Perhaps, based on tonight's results, I should have gone with a headline like "Tiny minority of MAGAts waste money to rent electric signboard in West Roxbury."

Election Day dawned at the Holy Name Rotary in West Roxbury as it always does: With the fence along Holy Name School festooned with candidate signs. This year, they were joined with a highway sign blaring out the phrase the slightly more polite insurrection supporters use instead of "Fuck Joe Biden."

Often those highway signs are owned by public entities. Might be worth poking around to see if there's a sticker saying who owns that. (And if you happen to find the battery disconnect while you're doing said poking, well, all the better.)

I've thought about doing this.. but where?

UK has its own issues just like ours. Canada.. Same. Australia, same.

Even socialism loving Sweden has 'conservative parties' working against its social system. There is a large movement to dismantle their public healthcare system and move to private payer. Yes really.

The political grass isn't greener anywhere else. Sure drinking dish soap vs bleach won't kill you right off, but eventually it will.

Sometimes I feel like all of this is being spearheaded by someone outside the country and is happening in other countries too. (Think Brazil, UK).. just seems to be a higher force trying to break up the world's governments via misinformation and chaos.

I think a lot of the shit is being stirred up by a few foreign governments who realized how easy it is to twist people's emotions when there's no accountability plus a few corporations (Facebook, Fox) who found how profitable conflict can be.

I gotta figure this is how the world felt in the 1930s, shortly before WWII.

There was an account on twitter that I saw kept getting retweeted with some funny memes, so I followed and saw something amazing. This account (from a guy who considered himself an "anarchist") was mostly funny memes about pop culture and everyday life, but 25% of them were anti-government, pro guns, anti-cop, anti tax, stuff that actually kind of fascinated me because I didn't know the extreme it could come to. This account had 25k followers and many of them had the same ideas. If you go further down the twitter wormhole you see many large accounts like this sharing their ideas.

The funny thing about a lot of the "followers" though, is that they seemed to be doing it for social media attention, and not for the cause (anarchism in this case). It was a way to gain more followers. You have women showing cleavage and putting anti government memes in front on it in text, people retweeting mask fights in gas stations, or school choice meetings were things got out of control. Add in a snarky comment and the likes and retweets start to come in.

Of course these groups are all anti-vax, with "government" being the enemy. Bring up the conspiracy theory that the government invented Covid and private companies invented the vaccines to combat it (as good of a conspiracy theory as any right?) and the anti government logic can't fight it. But the social sense of belonging remains. How many followers can I get? How many hearts (likes) do I get? Did I get these likes because of my memes or my boobs? Does it matter?

There's just way too many here and I'd rather play the odds and live in a less armed country.

When this all finally goes down (and read the room everyone, we're on the precipice of balkanization) tens of thousands of unhinged lunatics who believe in Pizza parlor sex dungeons and Democrats eat christian babies for immortality) have arsenals of automatic weapons, explosives, and a sympathetic political party that encourages them to do what's necessary to save America from Satan.

Two Democratic Senators have been openly bribed to block everything Biden proposes while GOP Reps Boebert & Gaetz are joking, JOKING via tweet about blowing up metal detectors at the Capitol Building with Tannerite.

The midterms are going to be violent, chaotic, and likely bloody. And we're not gonna fix this just by "Getting Out The Vote".

up

Almost all of these guns start as a legal guns. So legal gun owners are either committing crimes after the purchase or they are so negligent and irresponsible and are allowing their guns to be stolen.

The only way to disrupt the “illegal” gun market is to impose painful financial liabilities to gun manufacturers every time one of their weapons is recovered in any crime, weather it be a shooting or simple illegal possession.

Sweden has a pretty loose immigration law. I believe the only requirement is that

1) Live in Sweden for at least 2 years
2) Learn and Speak fluent Swedish

That's it. They will allow anyone.

And FWIW much like Brexit and here, it's a sticking point in politics... the whole "We're paying for healthcare for people I don't like" is identical there like it is here. They don't want people from other countries coming to Sweden for the healthcare and social services.

Racism and fear of people you don't know is alive and well in other countries.

But yes you're right, most countries won't take Americans or its such a high cost to do so (Canada is like this... costs a TON for an American to immigrate to Canada)

If you understood how federal student debt worked you'd be upset about it too. The government earns a profit off of student loans and it would cost the country nothing to forgive it. It would also be a major stimulus to the economy. All and all its a really dumb thing to put off doing.

don't think they exist in the same world as the rest of us do. "If we don't get everything we want, we want nothing" + the "We won't give you anything" opposition = an entirely predictable result of nothing changing. If you think that nothing is better than something, I'll gladly hand you the knife to cut off your nose.

It's incredible to watch criticism of two specific US Senators right now. As best I can tell, there's 52 out of 100 that are not saying yes to some proposed legislation right now; putting all the weight on the power of 2 out of 52 seats is missing the forest for the trees. If you had no idea how this worked, you might think that passing bills requires 100/100 votes and there are 2 "no" votes holding everything up.

We need to get back to being reasonable and rational. We don't even have to like each other or get along with each other to act reasonably and rationally!

We don't even have to like each other or get along with each other to act reasonably and rationally!

Do we as a people learn nothing from watching Curb Your Enthusiasm? Two things stand out from 11 seasons:

1) Larry telling Richard Lewis "(Expletive) you, and I'll see you tomorrow!" Both men recognize that they're still friends with common interests who are simply shutting it down for the day.

2) Whenever someone goes off on someone else, it's over a breach of etiquette, or a breach of morality. I can't recall during the entire run of the series a character assailing another character's intelligence.

Curb is, oddly, the picture of a utopian society: People who fight (because we're going to do that to entertain ourselves at a bare-ass minimum) over the etiquette of parking spaces and toilet paper hoarding because they have no serious problems with their wealth, education, health, or shelter.

If you think that nothing is better than something, I'll gladly hand you the knife to cut off your nose.

Easy to say when "something" is good enough to get by. It isn't, always. Throwing a ten foot rope to people drowning 50 feet from shore is arguably "something", but the people in need of help will still drown. For 40 years now, "something" policies have resulted in more and more people simply not having what they need to survive. Should they cheer and vote for that "something"?

up
Voting closed 0

is the "nothing" option the best one? What if it's a negative feedback loop and doing nothing means those who could do (and want to do) more are yanked from power because they did nothing?

I don't disagree with you that doing less than enough, over and over again, is not helping those who still need the help. But if we measured success only as having done the full, right thing, right away, we've definitely not passed that test.

The "Let's Go..." slogan seems kinda mild as political taunts go these days. Given that almost everyone I know uttered the phrase "Fuck Trump" with some frequency, the fact the others are saying the same about Biden in 3rd grade code doesn't really bother me. It's all the other things they say which are disgusting. (Say what you want about Biden, but at least respect democracy.)

Obviously, if that's a government owned sign, someone has a lot of explaining to do.

John, he said neighborhood. West Roxbury is a neighborhood. Methinks you are breaking down your analysis to a more granular level than that.

up
Voting closed 0

This sign is located in an area that was once a unit of geography running from the Charles River to Jackson Square, known as the Town of West Roxbury. Town hall was where Curtis Hall is in the center of Jamaica Plain. Conversely, the Town of Dorchester, except for Mattapan and those parts that became the Town of Hyde Park (which would have been Mattapan, anyway) is a very large area. To say that Neponset or Adams Corner is a neighborhood of Dorchester is no different, really, than saying that Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, and what we call West Roxbury are neighborhoods.

Hate to break it to you, but 30% is still low compared to many, many districts in America. And that's the lowest spread, many voting districts in W Rox were closer to 80/20. The bottom line is that the vast majority of people in this neighborhood do not agree with this rhetoric. Adam's headline is disingenuous and gives more power to these people than they actually have. I would have expected better of him.

up

up
Voting closed 0

The people of West Roxbury will probably be happier as either an independent town or a part of Dedham (though probably not of Newton), but just look to the Buckhead neighborhood in Atlanta, which is actively trying to secede, as a gauge of what the rest of Boston might think.

Neither Wu nor AEG would want West Roxbury to secede: the former wants the taxes, and the latter wants the votes...

up
Voting closed 0

Who would pay the taxes for the rest of the city?

up
Voting closed 0

Just in terms of tax revenue, single-family homes on lots of little streets are traditionally money losers for cities - all those schools and police and snow plowing and stuff.

What you really want is a lot of commercial development or dense residential, of the sort that the rest of Boston is just full of (and, yes, I realize West Roxbury actually has quite a few apartment buildings, but if the rest of West Roxbury can ignore Washington Street, well, for the purposes of this discussion, so can I).

It would be interesting to see how much West Roxbury pays out in taxes vs. how much it costs to provide services, but I don't think that from a money standpoint its disappearance would be a huge loss for the rest of Boston.

up
Voting closed 0

West Roxbury probably uses less resources than most other neighborhoods. Probably has the lowest per-capita utilization of BPS seats, barley needs any police resources.

Im sure West Roxbury would flourish and probably have an improved school system.

up
Voting closed 0

But relative to the average single-family suburb, I would think that West Roxbury has less demand for those public services. Public education is a good example: for better or for worse, a lot of families put their kids in parochial/private schools for K-6 -- and then for 7-12 if said kids don't get into one of the exam-turned-geographic-tier schools. This is in addition to the fact that a sizeable number of the current residents are seniors (so tax-paying households that don't need education services). There's also less demand for police: several months ago, I read somewhere on UHub that E-5 has one sole officer on duty most weeknights, with the regularly-scheduled officers diverted to other parts of the city.

There's also a point to be made about dense vs non-dense residential: one of the arguments against the "Weston Whopper" (also chronicled some time ago on UHub) was that new apartments would strain public schools, bringing in an influx of students without providing enough tax revenue (since each apartment unit obviously offers less tax revenue than a 4000-foot McMansion). Who knows if that's true, but from a purely intuitive standpoint, the explanation seems to make sense.

I certainly agree that an analysis of taxes vs. services would be interesting, though.

up
Voting closed 0

It's probably better than most of the rest of the city. It's not as good as downtown luxury condos or Beacon Hill/Back Bay/South End brownstones occupied by childless people or owned by absentee investors, but it brings in more $ than public housing or run-down triple-deckers in Dorchester or Eastie.

The real money comes from the commercial property which is taxed at a far higher rate.

There is a rampant Trumper or group of them, particularly active around the Dorchester/North Quincy Line. LGB was spray painted on the bill board for a school, by Morrissey Blvd next to Lamberts. Coincidence they chose a billboard that includes students of multiple races? Doubt it.
Traffic signs on Morrissey as it heads to Gallivan Blvd, as well as light poles on the bridge to Quincy, have been defaced with "DT24" stickers for a few months now. They get removed and re-appear. We all know what they really mean, and it is meant to intimidate.I am surprised (but shouldn't be) that it is not investigated.

Former Dot person here. It is easy as hell to climb up there. We did as kids. Before the commuter rail came back you could walk the tracks from Victory Road to Neponset Circle since a train only came by about once a year and then not at all in the late 80's until 1997.

Yes, there is someone putting that stuff out there but that billboard could have been advertising Tangerines and someone would have still painted it.

As far as being intimidated? You are? Fight back. If you are scared of one or two people sneaking around in the middle of the night posting stickers, you might already be lost.

Be brave and tell them to F'off.

up

I was going to bother with some explanation about why "fighting back" against hateful people can't happen for everyone and it can be dangerous, even life threatening. For example, would you like your grandparent, frail child, or just a regular guy who doesn't fight much, to confront angry white supremacists alone in the street at night? But, trying to make that understood is futile, and its nothing you would have to worry about anyway. Crazy, I am actually feeling a little betrayed and disappointed here, because in the past I used to like most of what you had to say, but things have changed.

What's next, "Whites Only" at Tenean Beach? If you took a drive by there any time of year you would likely see a majority minority demographic among users. The biggest complaint of the people living right there is that they see little children playing in the hot sand without a decent shower or spray deck, and water which is unfit for swimming more often than any beach in the DCR system. As it is, that beach in Port Norfolk/Neponset is accessible from Mattapan by a bike path and system of parks which exist because of over 30 years of advocacy by residents from that neighborhood, Cedar Grove, and Lower Mills. Get off your stereotyping high horse and get involved with some real people in real neighborhoods, and perhaps you might start speaking from personal knowledge.
