Boston College pulls out of bowl game because it no longer has enough players to field a team

WBZ reports BC, which was scheduled to play East Carolina in the Military Bowl in Annapolis tomorrow has pulled out because it's lost 40 players to a combination of injuries, opt-outs and, yes, of course, Covid-19.

Teams must play every game, but all players are PCR-tested and individually isolated before each game, and all positives obviously have to sit the game out. If a team's "COVID game" is not up to snuff and too many players are out sick, they just have to field less than a full complement of players, and get the snot kicked out of them (metaphorically).

How about first testing children that stand for hours in lines in your fine city of Boston?

Whataboutism until we have derailed from the topic at hand, reaching your level of lulz at our frustration?

Even though it is the last game of the season for both the Eagles and the Pirates, you don't want to field a team with too few players. It's just dangerous.

The ACC tried forfeits with league basketball games when one of the schools couldn't play due to Covid, which is akin to what you are thinking, but they appear to have reversed course on that rule.

I'm curious why that would be. I don't actually know all that much about football.

(To be clear, my suggestion was facetious and I'm aware that it would be a bad idea for a number of reasons—people trying to hide positives, teams and players being unfairly disadvantaged due to circumstances outside of their control, etc. But it didn't seem like there would be direct physical danger.)

I don't know, but I do know that football teams don't like to field only a small number of players. The days of 2 way ironman players is long gone, and probably for the best. It probably has something to do with line players, less so wide receivers and cornerbacks.

Well a team like BC has about 25 of them. players who either had connections to get them in the team (Bob Krafts grandson), Local kids who walked on (coaches do that for recruiting purposes), or other random walkons who BC thought would be good but ended up being Rudy’s.

Anyway if you play those guys, it’s not a competitive game, as not only are they Rudy’s they don’t have the practice time or reps to do things the right way. it would look ugly and people might actually get hurt.

Rule of thumb is the walk-ons dress for home games but don't travel to the road games.

In this particular case, BC would've have been missing injured players, those who have decided to transfer and those who opted out to avoid injury before participating in the NFL draft process. Then you can add in those who tested positive for Covid
