Police: Teens beat up man after he objects to them shooting Nerf guns at his head at Downtown Crossing T stop

Transit Police report arresting three of six or seven teens they say threw a man against a wall and punched him repeatedly after he took offense to getting head in the head with projectiles from their Nerf guns, around 7 p.m. on Monday.

Police say the teens, all between 14 and 16, had been pointing their Nerf guns at other passengers and acting like general assholes when a 66-year-old man entered through the Orange Line fare gates and they decided to pump him with their Nerf projectiles, hitting him in the head.

The victim exchanged words with the group. The group of juveniles then physically attacked the 66 year old punching him and throwing him against the wall while they continued their vicious assault. After the cowardly assault the group fled and entered into a southbound Red Line train. The victim sustained injuries about his head requiring EMS to transport him to a local area hospital for emergency treatment.

Police say officers caught up with the teens outside JFK/UMass - where they were also "causing a ruckus."

Based on witness statements/descriptions as well as video surveillance review officers placed 3 male juveniles into custody for Assault & Battery w/a Dangerous Weapon on a Victim Over 60 years of age.

Police add detectives are now investigating whether the wayward youths were involved in other attacks on the T earlier, at both Downtown Crossing and other stations. In those cases, people were physically attacked, and not with Nerf guns, police say.

How come the Transit Police didn't warn the riding public about other attacks?

They happened the same day.

This is completely anti social behavior. Physically attacking an elderly person via group beating. These kids are a lost cause and should be committed to DYS on felony A&B charges until they reach maturity. It is the only way to deal with kids like this.

I'd be interested in seeing the short- and long-term outcomes research on this that led you to this conclusion.

Why were only 3 out of 6 or 7 arrested? Did the police decide the others didn't do anything wrong, or did they not catch them?

And for better or worse, they didn't have enough.

Hopefully someone will be able to impress on these kids and their parents (among other things) that aiming a gun on strangers, even a toy one, is a great way to end up shot in the head by a real gun and make your mommy extremely sad. In a more gun-friendly state that moronic prank would likely have taken a much darker turn.

In a more gun-friendly state ...

In a more gun-friendly state, their guns would likely have not been toys.

In North Carolina it could have been a real gun disguised as a nerf gun. This modification is totally legal in that State.

That must be love.

What nobody has reported is the elderly gentleman was an Asian American. This attack follows the elderly Asian gentleman attacked at Quincy Center station and the blind Asian student attacked at the Henderson school.

Actually I'm a white male in my 40s and over the course of the past year have been violently attacked by kids pulling this shit repeatedly. Has nothing to do with anyone's nationality has to do with lack of mbta transit cops and red shirts monitoring the subways.
