Driver mugged behind the wheel after two guys jump into his car outside Boston Medical Center, DA says

A man in his car on Northampton Street outside Boston Medical Center was robbed Tuesday afternoon by two men who jumped into his car - with one of them removing his key while the other put him in a chokehold, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Joseph Kahler, 30, of Weymouth, and Andrew Honohan, 39, of Revere, were both arrested not long after - Kahler after trying, and failing, to escape by running into oncoming traffic at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard.

According to the DA's office, police responded to a report around 5:20 p.m. that several men were trying to rob somebody on Northampton Street at Fellows Street.

The victim told police he was in his car when an unknown male entered and removed the key from the ignition. Another male, wearing a white shirt over his face, entered the rear passenger seat and put the victim in a chokehold, threatening to stab him if he didn't give them his possessions. The victim told officers the male in the backseat then "went through my pockets."

Both ran away, but didn't get far:

Responding officers found the men matching the description at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard. Kahler sprinted into oncoming traffic on Melnea Cass Boulevard before officers restrained and handcuffed him. Officers found Honohan at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Harrison Avenue. They frisked him and found a large silver knife. Officers recovered the victim's wallet in the area where they took Kahler into custody.

Both were charged with armed robbery; Kahler was also charged with resisting arrest.

Prosecutors asked that both have bail set at $10,000, but to order them held for violating earlier charges. Boston Municipal Court Judge Maureen Flaherty ordered both held without bail for 60 days and to then be released if they can raise $1,000 in bail, the DA's office reports.

Innocent, etc.

Scary and good reason to lock your doors. As an attractive female living in the city I always carry pepper spray for situations like this.

No way you're actually a female.

Anyone thinking there would be a situation like that. Who doesn't lock their doors when they get in their car? It's not like we're still in the manual push down button to lock door ages.

Though, some cars have the option to lock automatically after you get going. Then, there's my wife who will lock them when she feels uncomfortable.

I’m guessing ugly women carry bike locks?

Having grown up in a large city, I had that drilled into me by my father to the point that it's as automatic as fastening my seatbelt. My car doors are locked no matter what town or neighborhood I'm in.

How long is the city government going to allow a level of loitering that gives rise to drug dealers, violent criminals, pimps, and an open-air drug market preying on those with addictions?

We watched it grow exponentially under Marty Walsh. The clock is ticking fast and Mayor Wu needs to make clearing the street of this illegal open-air drug and sex market more of a priority. Whatever is being done is not enough to make the area safe for residents of the city. We can all expect to watch this problem grow even more through the warm season.

If you sell drugs, why would you not go to this area at this point? Easy pickings and the city government is to blame.

Wu and company also closed the engagement center so there is no place for these people to get food, water, go to the bathroom, etc... It’s as bad as ever there, and getting worse by the day.
