'Slimy, horrid slugs' overrun the North Shore

Salem News columnist shudders at the very thought of them, says mass drownings of slugs in pans of beer can't come soon enough for her.

I remember one of those puff local interest after dinner TV programs in Portland, OR where they did a whole segment on slug control (provided you didn't want to scatter Corry's Slug and Snail Death around). One of the things they tested was to collect slugs, pulverize them in a blender, and distribute the moosh around your garden, with step by step instructions.

It was always good to mention all the slugs to Californians, to discourage them from moving and spoiling the Oregon housing market.

"Slugs! Everywhere! Suckers grow up to a foot long. Every morning, I have to scrape them off my car windows. Sometimes they get into the laundry and the kitchen cupboards."

As a regular cyclist in MetroWest, I have never had to clean slug guts off my bike as much as I have this year. More than ever. The tires pick them up off the road and throw them on the downtube, seat tube, the fork, the BB, and all over the brakes. After just a short 25-miler, the bike is a mess.
