Northeastern University tells California governor he's not the boss of them

California now has a law that bans colleges from giving prospective students any sort of legacy preference. But the Huntington News reports Northeastern is continuing to consider legacy status as part of a "holistic" view of applicants because it's based in Massachusetts.

40 years ago, NU was a small commuter school. They may have thier first generation of legacies now, but I doubt that's a huge benefit to anyone.

I would have sworn Northeastern always had dorms @Anon but I will admit commuters made up most of the student population.

That's the spirit. The elites don't take orders from state bureaucrats.

Last time I checked Northeastern wasn't in California.

It opened a campus in Oakland in 2022 and one in San Jose last year.

Some people assume that Northwestern University is in Washington State.

Or is it?

No, no, still Northeastern University, Seattle campus.

Maybe you meant Washington D.C.? Still no, that's the Arlington VA campus of Northeastern...

I'm not sure San Jose is far enough south for this but with a campus in say San Diego or LA, all 4 corners of the lower 48 would be Northeastern.

Commenter was talking about Northwestern, which is in Illinois.

I know where Northwestern is located, which isn't in the northwest at all. Unlike Northeastern, which is located in the northeast, and the northwest, and the southeast and the south-ish west and more...

No, no, still Northeastern University, Seattle campus.

Your words.

The comment I responded to was "Some people assume that Northwestern University is in Washington State."

I think we both know that NorthWESTern is not in Washington State, but rather is located not to far outside of Chicago. On the other hand, as I referenced, NorthEASTern, a university based in Boston, also has a campus in Seattle, which is the last time I checked, a city in Washington State.

Maybe my point was lost, that's on me. The original comment said some get confused and think that NorthWESTern is located in the northwest, which it is not, and I tried to add to the confusing naming situation by replying about the campus of NorthEASTern University which actually is located in the northwest.

Yo legacy THIS! California should focus on challenge. Like preventing wildfires and squeezing money out of all its celebrities to clean up the miles of homeless camps. Mind your own business and get your house in orde.

...since Northeastern operates a campus in California.

We'll see who wins in court. But what California is doing is a good idea, and not harmful to anyone but dumb rich kids.

There are a lot of non-wealthy people going to Northeastern and there are many societal, institutional and familial goods that flow from the continuity, community, support and more of attending the school your folks attended.

The voters rejected the intolerance and creeping technofascism and totalitarianism in my Democratic Party. We need to he better than to dehumanize each other by loading terms like “NIMBY” and “legacy” with scorn.

Pick a word just shy of “outrage” and that was our experience yesterday as we are still receiving poor-mouthing texts from the DNC learning Oprah didn’t volunteer her time to a cause she pretends to champion and was paid a million buck to appear for the the empty suit in an empty campaign.

it's actual worth. That goes for both the school and many of its students. They've come a long way in the last 30 years but give me a break. It's a school for rich kids who want to live in Boston -often on parent's dime- but who can't get into better schools.
