Police: Three teens celebrated mugging in Southwest Corridor Park at nearby pizza place

Boston Police report arresting two 15-year-olds last night on charges they pushed somebody off his bike in the park around 11 p.m. at Lamartine and Hoffman streets, then took his bike and his money. A third teen, 14, allegedly accompanied them, but was not charged.

Police say they found the trio not long after inside Cappy's Pizza on Centre Street and arrested the two older ones on a charge of unarmed robbery after they gave conflicting stories where they had been earlier. Police say they released the 14-year-old after witnesses said he did not take a direct role in the attack.

I've heard of bike muggings along South West Corridor path for years. I've even had a basketball thrown at the group of inline skaters I was in. Is there something about the South West Corridor path that attracts young muggers?

I also remember a discussion of why the city police can't do anything about muggings on the path (obviously not that same as the above location) because it was out side their jurisdiction. That despite a victim being attacked right outside police headquarters. That was straightened out, but one of those strange Boston things.

The Southwest Corridor Park is state property, so the official patrols are from the state police. Quite often, no money is allocated for state police patrols along there. We used to lobby for the money, get it, and then have the money get used for something else. And even those patrols were just for the summer months.

The Boston police do patrol along the Corridor when they can. It would be nice if the state took on their responsibility. So far, no one has been able to figure out how to influence the state enough to make it happen.

I think what there is about the Southwest Corridor Park that attracts young muggers is that there aren't enough police patrols to deter them.
