Roslindale armed-robbery suspect leads victims, police on chase down train tracks

A man who robbed the Alfa gas station on Washington Street at South Street tried escaping victims pursuing him by climbing up onto the Needham Line tracks and running toward Roslindale Square around 7 p.m.

The victims - part of a larger group who initially had the guy cornered in a yard off South Street - were joined by several Boston Police officers, who caught up with him on the tracks behind Lee Hill Road.

Police recovered a cash-register drawer by the Edison plant on South Street. The Needham Line was shut as officers searched the tracks for the gun the suspect indicated he had.

The station was robbed last night, as well.

Yep, that's my block. Heard a mob of angry male voices and saw a car come flying down the road the wrong way (one of the ALFA people I believe). The mob cornered the guy in my next door neighbor's yard, but some were saying he had a gun. The guy hopped over the residential fence pretty slowly, apparently he was a fatso, and then got hung up in the heavily wooded, almost vertical slope between our land and the tracks. No idea how or if he managed to scale the higher fence to the tracks. I thought it was some sort of a domestic situation based on the testosterone crazed mob that was taunting and hollering outside. I called the cops right away and about 5 minutes later we had 4 cruisers pull up and immediately tear off after the guy. I really hope they find the gun, they're still out there and the brought in a dog.

Oh and the map is wrong, it's the intersection of Washington, South and Firth, not the village jog of South.

Guy's also lucky the Needham Line wasn't running anyway due to the suicide at Ruggles.

Map fixed; I suppose there's a perfectly logical reason why South Street is split like that.

South Street, from what I have read is the original road in these parts, going back to when this was farming community. The first name for Rosi was actually South St. Corners. Anyways, I believe South St ran uninterrupted from the Monument in JP to Holy Name until Washington St subsumed sections of it. I still have no idea how all of the street names got jumbled up around Forest Hills Station.

Roslindale was originally known as South Street Crossing, not south street corners!
South street was "the south road to dedham,"
Centre was "the north road to dedham."

rather than an accident, or a murder?

I always assumed that the wacky split in South Street had something to do with something that happened when the Orange Line was rerouted and the new station was constructed over the tracks and/or when the Arborway flyover was constructed. But, I don't know that for a fact.

They caught him in the back yard of 19 Lee Hill Rd, eventually took him away in an ambulance. They are still searching the area at 9:45 pm. At one point there were eight police cars and 20 or so cops here.

Foot pursuits and evidence searches around the train tracks are inherently dangerous. When I hear of incidents like this, I think of Boston Police Det. Thomas Gill, killed by a train 24 years ago this month. R.I.P. Tommy. Never forgotten!

I bet the Emporium has been around these parts longer than you have. My friend worked there on the night shift when she was a teenager.... bullet proof glass & all. We would go visit - at night...OMG I can't believe I am still alive to tell the story!

If I had the money for an Alfa Romeo would I still be "Ghetto"?

actually ALFA is not mispelled....its the first letter of the Greek alphabet and in Greek it is ΑΛΦΑ (alfa). And the owners have been there for 30 years and are not ghetto.

BPD reports he was Scott Teixeira, 44, and the gun was sitting on the center console of his car, parked on South Street.

Innocent, etc.
