Police: 14-year-old with loaded gun in his waistband arrested

Boston Police report an attempt to arrest a gang member on crack charges ended in a melee in which the guy escaped - but after which they were able to arrest a kid with a loaded 9-mm gun in his waistband.

Police say members of the Youth Violence Strike Force were patrolling Normandy Street due to a recent spike in gun incidents around midnight when they noticed a bunch of teens exit 17 Normandy St. and get in a white car - which had been spotted leaving a shooting scene:

While awaiting backup, the officers followed the vehicle and observed it park illegally on Creston Street. The front seat passenger quickly exited the vehicle and attempted to walk away while making movements consistent with those of a person concealing a firearm. Officers were able to stop the male and immediately recognized him as a known member of a street gang who had been involved in previous violent encounters. Due to his violent past and furtive movements, officers feared this male may have a weapon and performed a pat frisk. During their encounter, officers recovered a bag of rock-like substance consistent with crack cocaine.

Police say that before he could be arrested, a second car drove up and parked across the street:

Officers recognized the driver as the brother of the suspect they had detained, as well as a known gang member. The occupants of both vehicles then began shouting to each other, and the detained suspect encouraged his brother to run away from the police. The situation quickly escalated when the remaining occupants of both cars, ignoring the officers’ commands, exited the vehicles, and the detained suspect jumped up off the curb becoming extremely hostile toward the officers.

Two guys promptly ran away, but the officers were successful in detaining one teen, who, upon a pat down, was discovered to have "a loaded black and silver Kurz 380 caliber 9MM firearm."

The teen, 14, was charged with being delinquent for unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and carrying a loaded firearm. Two adults and a juvenile also detained at the scene were released.

Not charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor?

So cops have been viewed as the bad guys lately for various reasons. Some maybe deserved. Some maybe not.

But reading stories like this, all I can say is, "Thank You" to the BPD. I'm glad they took this gun and this kid off the streets.

Now, the courts must do their job and get him off our streets for carrying an illegal gun. Wonder if a 14 yr old from this type family has any hope of ever being rehabbed?
