Police: Guy smashes South End man in the head with vase, pan before victim flees out fire escape

Boston Police report officers had to use a taser twice to subdue and arrest a Malden man they say went berserk in the Chandler Inn early this morning.

Police say an officer on a routine patrol around 1:45 a.m. spotted a man bleeding from the head and yelling for help outside 26 Chandler St.:

After contacting EMS for the victim, the officer was informed that the victim had been struck with a metal pan and a ceramic vase several times by the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Michael Perry of Malden, before escaping the assault via the fire escape from the third-floor room where the suspect remained. Additional responding officers then observed Perry smashing the window of that room and throwing furniture and other objects out of the window. BPD Tactical units responded, and after several failed attempts to negotiate with Perry, they made entry into the room. When Perry continued to be erratic and uncooperative with police, officers deployed a taser to no avail. Perry then jumped from the window onto an awning, then fell to the ground where he continued in a violent struggle with officers. Officers tased the suspect once more before he was finally taken into custody.

Perry was taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment. He was charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, assault and battery on a police officer, willful and malicious destruction of property and resisting arrest, police say.

Innocent, etc.

Sounds like it happened in a room in the Chandler Inn. That's the only building around there with a fire escape and awning. The fire escape on the Berkeley Street side was still down as of 6:45am.

Isn't the bar downstairs no longer a gay bar?

It is still a gay bar, but they don't discriminate against straight people, so you get a mix of patrons.

Ah, okay. I actually met up with a date there a couple years back. As I'm sitting there, and as people are filing in, our date progresses and I'm starting to think I invited her to a gay bar on a first date. Eventually the clientele mixed up quite a bit. I mean, not that there would have been anything wrong with it, but I found it a bit funny at the time.

Technically, but it's still a mostly gay clientele.
