Police charge more than just food was on the menu at Charlestown eatery
Boston Police report raiding a Bunker Hill Street restaurant they say doubled as a drug salesroom.
After the raid, around 1:30 p.m., yesterday, ISD was called in to immediately shut D'Rafa Restaurant, 156 Bunker Hill St., due to the potential dangers of the drugs in the place - heroin, cocaine and fentanyl - police say.
Arrested: Rafel Pimental, 46, Juan Guerrero-Torrest, 28, Matea Sanchez, 60, Rosselys Pimental-Melo, 23, and Ada Mejia-Mejia, 40, all of Charlestown, and all charged with trafficking heroin, trafficking fentanyl and trafficking cocaine.
Police say they seized half a kilogram of fentanyl, 29 bags of crack, 10 bags or heroin and $7,144 in cash.
Innocent, etc.

THAT must be why the food tastes so good
I was just saying last night that they were the last Hispanic restaurant I've had food from, back when I lived in C-town 6+ years ago.
how
How do you go 6+ years without eating Latin American food?
I know, right? Especially
I know, right? Especially when Roslindale has easily half a dozen good options.
What's good in Roslindale?
Not for drugs but Latino food. Eaten at Yucatan (solid), Las Palmas (not... my thing), Romano's (Mexican side of the menu, fine).
I'll vouch for La Taqueria
And an old chum from Old Roslindale days gives La Lechonera a thumbs up.
Puerto Rican and Caribbean food
is not the same as Mexican, which is different from Central American, which is different from Brazilian, which is different from Bolivian, Peruvian, Chilean, Argentinian, etc., etc.
You don't say? Well I'll be
You don't say? Well I'll be damned!
I've been to half those countries and know the difference. My question was how do you not have food from any of those countries, and the many others, over the course of 6 years.
I really thought this was
I really thought this was going to be about Kipo's. Any news about the woman who got shot there? (Or was shot nearby and made her way there.)
Hm. Isnt that the same
Hm. Isnt that the same property that was a ice cream parlor in the 90s? An ice cream parlor that was rarely open and when it was had few to no customers.
"Ice cream parlor never open"
"Ice cream parlor never open" reminds me of the Friendly's that was on Mt. Auburn near Watertown Square. Business hours were something like Monday through Saturday 10 to 8, Saturday noon to 6 and Sunday closed.
It was the only ice cream place within a mile, and it was like they were trying to lose money.
Now a Dunk's. And a whole
Now a Dunk's. And a whole mile and a half from the Friendly's on Arsenal Street.
Sorry, I meant Starbucks.

Same Pimental family?...
Must have read about 5 stories of folks with Pimental surname involved with drugs in Boston (Roslindale/West Roxbury/JP)
here are a few - same family?

Maybe, maybe not
It's be like asking if everybody names "Robinson" is related; it's a fairly common name.

um OK, but I don't remember an exorbitant number of folks named Robinson getting arrested in Boston for major drug dealing over the past few years.
I believe Adam
I've written many unkind words about the Roslindale Pimentals on this website, but seeing as we had a Connolly and a Conley running for mayor 4 years ago, each a political star in their own right, and we had 2 Cahills running for State Treasurer back in 2006, neither related, I concur. The Charlestown Pimentals are probably a different family.
There are restaurants in
There are restaurants in Charlestown?
After a recent trip to the Monument, we wanted to find a place for dinner. The only options were a very expensive place, a noisy historic pub (maybe for another night), and a Todd English pizza place (yechhh).
There's always the 99 ...
[Ducks] ...
But what Todd English place? Figs closed ages ago. There's another?

What? Too soon?
Also, gotta love that when I typed in "99 Charlestown" into google, it auto completed "shooting."
Believe Figs is still open
Olives is now Legal Oysteria.

And if you're willing to walk about 10 minutes from the monument:
The noisy place is probably Ironsides, which really is a good neighborhood spot - I've had many beers there. Good place to watch games.
Brewer's Fork and Navy Yard Bistro are my favorites.
I was assuming Tangerino's or
I was assuming Tangerino's or the Bistro were the "really expensive" place. :) Bistro's awesome, a real neighborhood gem. I actually had my wedding there and as such it's our go-to "date night" spot. John's good people and I wish he'd gotten the old five cents building.
I forgot all about Ironsides and thought the "noisy pub" might have been warren.
This is a fun game!
Not a dinner place, but ...
Zume's Coffee House is a short walk from Thompson Square.
The Brewer's Fork in Charlestown
is really good.
Super chill and some really
Super chill and some really unique offerings while still being family-friendly with a great staff, too. A rare combination.
(I have no real affiliation with the place aside from being there probably twice a week!)
Food desert
Charlestown has been an absolute wasteland for restaurants. Monument, Brewer's Fork and Blackmoor are all good recent entrants ... but places have a hard time staying open.
(Unless they're slanging H)
Reminds me of a few places. One, the Brookline Village spa from
20 years ago that always had half-empty shelves with expired food. Turns out their main revenue source was retail weed.
Then there was the "upscale" liquor store at Mass Ave and Washington in the South End, which I walked into once, found the prices on their shitty stock risibly high, and walked out, baffled, never to return. It closed after a year or so for unspecified drug dealing.
My best story might be the Waltham Tavern, my favored South End bucket-o'-blood dive for years, the last of its kind in the neighborhood. That joint, the main retail outlet of Philip "Sonny" Baiona, the Italian mafia's soldier in the South End, was up to a *lot* of bad business before the law finally caught up to it: http://mcslimjb.blogspot.com/2009/04/lesson-in-workforce-management-from...
The Ham's building is now luxury condos: Peter King lived in one of them for a while. Sonny's old social club / office up the block is now The Wholy Grain, a fancy little cafe. One old story posits Sonny strangling a rival there. I always chuckle to think how oblivious the local yoga moms must be to its sordid history.
A POUND?????
Fentanyl doses are measured in micrograms. 3 milligrams are enough to kill an adult human. If I did my arithmetic right, and if that were pure fentanyl, it would be enough to kill 15,000 people.
I'm surprised it is unwrapped there
When a relative did a bust for the Coasties, he actually got dosed from inhaling dust off of it when they pulled it out of the hold and it was still wrapped (he was wearing gloves).
