Boston firefighter accused of sexual attack at Jamaica Plain station

WCVB reports a Boston firefighter is free on personal recognizance after his arraignment earlier this month on charges he tried to kiss a woman, then pulled her pants down, exposed himself and pushed her onto a couch before she fled.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports the alleged incident happened Jan. 14 at the Centre Street firehouse and that Sanchez was arraigned on charges of assault and battery and indecent assault and battery on April 18 in West Roxbury Municipal Court.

Innocent, etc.

Bail is not about punishment, it's about ensuring a person shows up for trial, and that they don't do any harm in the meantime. As guilty as he appears to be based on the very limited information that we (the public) know, he is innocent until he is proven guilty. If we don't afford that to him, what's to prevent an unproven accusation from landing you behind bars for weeks or months before a trial date?

He is on leave from his job. He's been ordered to stay away from his accuser and the firehouse. The alleged incident took place three months ago, and there is no hint of any similar incident before or since. There is no indication that he has the means to go into hiding to avoid prosecution. All of this has been carefully evaluated by a judge (who happens to be a woman, if it matters).

As easy as it is to roll our eyes and complain about the court system, there was no reason for the judge to release this guy if there were any reason to suspect that he might flee or be a danger to the public. Holding him as punishment simply because he has been accused of something violent and awful is unconstitutional. If the case is as rock-solid as it seems, he'll be punished once he as convicted, as a deterrent to himself and others and hopefully to start to address whatever is wrong with his brain that caused him to do this.

That's not all that long. Also: So what?

there is no hint of any similar incident before or since.

No, there have been no reports made and/or made public. How much you want to bet this is really his first time doing this? How much you want to bet the average lady, weighing her options, is super jazzed about trying to go up against the BFD/BPD?

I'm not challenging your points about the purpose of bail, flight risk, etc.. but your thinly-veiled defense of and apologizing for behavior that almost certainly doesn't come out of nowhere is way off and is why so many women either never report assaults or are not believed when they do.
