Woman dead of head trauma in Mattapan

UPDATE: Police have ruled it vehicular homicide and have released photos of the driver and car.

WCVB reports a woman was found dead at Hiawatha and Fottler roads around 3:30 p.m. Police initially said she was the victim of a hit-and-run crash, but now say they are investigating just how she suffered her fatal injuries.

So that makes it two Massachusetts women who have died by cowardly hit and run drivers today. And its still only the afternoon. There is no greater danger to the average Massachusetts citizen than drivers.

Give it a rest with the "all cars and all people who drive are the epitome of evil in this world" crap. Cowardly, irresponsible, and/or bad people are the problem. You’re right about that. But cars, weapons, fists, it doesn't matter, people are the problem. Say it out loud. People. Hell, a pedestrian was just killed in NYC by a cyclist who ran a red light.

Condolences to the family and friends of the victim, I hope they find out what actually happened and catch whoever is responsible. They should be jailed and not allowed to operate a vehicle again. Period.

We can talk.

Otherwise, drivers may not be all evil but EVIL DRIVERS KILL A LOT OF PEOPLE because people like you excuse and enable and normalize bad driving and automotive privilege.

What are you insecure about? Why do you think this comment is about you? Cars are more dangerous weapons than fists. Look at facts instead oppressing the people that are upset about these deaths. If you can't be bothered to be honest, then you need to give it rest.

I hope they find out what actually happened and catch whoever is responsible.

That screams defense. And swirl, sorry for not being even more blunt about catching this person meaning catching and arresting this person?

I’m simply calling out a consistently over the top take that doesn’t focus on the actual issue, which is people. Just like many people shouldn’t own weapons, many people shouldn’t be allowed near a steering wheel. I’m with you. 100%. But sweeping generalizations against a thing you don’t like vs focusing on the actual problem gets old.

Death by car is at all time high because selfish people bully anyone that that calls out these preventable tragedies. Vision zero is everyone’s responsibility.

Helped along by public officials willing to publish unsubstantiated hokum about “drunk pedestrians,” media outlets like the Today Show made “distracted walking” out to be the real public safety threat.

More recently, solid research has identified very different causes contributing to the rise in pedestrian fatalities. A recent report by the Insurance Institute for Auto Safety found that the growth in SUV sales explains a significant share of the increase in pedestrian deaths.

Now an excellent investigative report by the Detroit Free Press and USA Today reveals how the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration knew about the risks of SUVs for years — and did nothing.

A 2015 NHTSA report reviewed a range of research showing that people are two to three times more likely to be killed when struck by an SUV than by a typical passenger car. For children, there’s an even greater four-fold disparity in mortality. The finding “has not been widely shared,” the papers report.

You're right, sweeping generalizations don't matter, numbers and facts do except they don't, so we keep beating the drum about the dangers of motor vehicles.

Kinopio was pretty clear that people driving cars that cause or almost cause crashes are the problem here.

Sorry that it triggers you.

BTW 10 cyclists and 65 people have been killed by motor vehicles in NYC this year already. Of the 754 pedestrians killed on NYC streets in the half decade, three pedestrians were killed by cyclists. Weird that you're just not getting it.

I'd wager money that the poor victim had a license and drove a car. If not her, someone in her family.

For all we know, with the information we have, perhaps this was a circumstance where the victim walked into the road as the car passed. Or maybe not. In any event, the driver should have had the common decency to stop and admit to their role in this person's demise.

Perhaps both of us, with hindsight, might see that a motor vehicle might not be involved at all.

But yeah, drivers are the problem, even when they may not be.

I was just watching channel 25’s report on this. There might not have been a motor vehicle involved.

Crazy.

Yes, it's no longer necessarily a hit-and-run (it might still wind up being one, but as you say, the cause of the victim's injuries is still under investigation).

Yeesh, that person driving would have to have been going awful fast around that corner (if that location is indeed correct...). And yes it is drivers who are routinely killing people day in and day out, maybe not as bad as gun deaths but it sure is up there... Far too few are aware of the true killing power of these multi-ton vehicles many of us drive, and the SUV designs that make it even more likely there will be a death if a person is hit. My sincere thoughts to her family.

So, check your assumptions. Cops are not sure why the woman was lying in the road.

Not and cause that level of injuries - and yet still be able to ride off.

Cyclists don't roll around in metal cages - when they hit things or people they get hurt.

Let's look at the stats that spin put up: odds are extremely high that it was a motor vehicle.

A cyclist with a blackjack could have done it.

But to be abundantly clear, right now none of us know what happened to this poor woman (unless the person who did this is reading this.)

Traffic accidents are one of the dangers we accept as part of living in the modern world. There will be plenty of hand wringing over speed limits, crosswalks, punishments, etc but we all intuitively know that it’s something we have to live with- like brain cancer from mobile phones, high doses of radiation from air travel, or man boobs from processed foods full of refined carbs and linoleic acid.

People pretend to be empathetic to the few emotional reactionaries that go into hysterics every time a few lives are lost but will anyone stop driving? Ban non commercial vehicles in Boston? How about just making the drivers test a little harder so people with poor eyesight and lousy hand eye coordination don’t get licenses?

Nope.
