Transit Police report they are looking for a guy they say walked up to another man on an Orange Line train approaching State Street around 3:25 p.m. on May 8 and "without warning or provocation" punched him in the face so hard the man required surgery.

Why so long.
Why does it take almost a month after the incident for the Transit Police to release the photo?
The Orange Line stations are
The Orange Line stations are not inherently dangerous places, but you do have to be aware of your surroundings there, as there is rarely police presence.
Are there any personnel
Are there any personnel whatsoever routinely in these stations? Even at DTX...?
Red-shirted volunteers who do
Red-shirted volunteers who do the best they can. This is another of those head-shaking things you see, but in the last month there was a guy sleeping on the floor of the Downtown Crossing concourse. Saw him twice. Not on a bench, or in a corner, but in the middle of the concourse. I asked the volunteer if someone had checked on him, the guy said, yeah, for some reason he likes to sleep there. So they are aware of people there, but no one should expect them to have to get involved with a miscreant down there.
Orange Line
Maybe the victim made the mistake of making eye contact. It's basically prison rules down on the Orange Line platforms. A guy got coldcocked in the face midafternoon and gets away with it?
Do you actually ride the Orange Line?
I do, and I start and end at Forest Hills, and for the most part it's just people who want to get where they're headed, not Thunderdome below ground level.
Orange
Go from Back Bay to State all the time. I don’t look at anyone and brace myself on the train so I don’t touch anyone. Safety first.
?
So don't stare at people and don't fall on people. This is normal adulting, not "prison rules"
The tip off for this guy was the face mask. It's tricky because it looks like a medical mask, but I don't think it should be legal to hide your face indoors. It is rude and intimidating.
Antidotal, but:
There's a lot of angry, pissed off people on the T, streets, and highways. Just a lot of angry, hostile people.
This guy was probably paranoid from drug use. Just an educated guess. The victim probably looked in his direction 2 seconds longer than he should.
Angry People
I know what you mean about the angry, hostile people everywhere. It seems that every single cell phone conversation I overhear in public is somebody arguing with somebody on the other end. Or maybe it's just that it's easier to notice those because voices are raised when people are arguing. But it still seems there are an awful lot of them.
Orange
He was certainly dressed for the Orange Line.
